摘要: A wireless network is used for a communication session between a mobile station and an endpoint. The wireless network receives endpoint bits representing communications from the endpoint for the mobile station and uses a first sector to transmit a forward link signal that encodes the endpoint hits. The mobile station generates mobile station hits representing communications from the mobile station for the endpoint and transmits a reverse link signal encoding the mobile station bits. A controller detects an imbalance between an error level in the forward link signal received by the mobile station and an error level in the reverse link signal received by the first sector. In response, the wireless network uses a second sector to receive the reverse link signal without using the second sector to transmit the endpoint bits. The reverse link signals received by the first and second sectors may be combined for diversity gain.

摘要: A controller monitors resource usage in each of a plurality of sectors and identifies any sector with resource usage that exceeds a threshold value as a high usage sector. The controller evaluates the mobile stations in its area and identifies any mobile station that is using a high usage sector and at least two other sectors for a communication session as a candidate mobile station. The controller applies a predictive algorithm to determine whether any candidate mobile station is able to continue its respective communication session without using its respective high usage sector. In this determination, the signal levels that a mobile station reported for the sectors in its active set, other than the high usage sector, may be used to calculate a combined signal level. If the combined signal level exceeds a predefined value, the mobile station is instructed to drop the high usage sector.

摘要: A method for selecting a wireless coverage sector to serve a mobile station, such as in response to a handoff request that designates a sector-identifier that represents two or more possible sectors. A serving radio access network (RAN) may identify potential sectors in the region and may then select the sector whose azimuth is closest to the geographic bearing of the mobile station from the sector's base station. Further, in the event of a tie between two or more sectors or in other circumstances, the RAN may also take into consideration how close the mobile station is to various base stations, such as selecting the sector to whose base station the mobile station is closest. In a system that uses neighbor lists to govern handoff, the invention can help to facilitate handoff in a scenario where a mobile station requests handoff to a sector not listed in the mobile station's neighbor list.

摘要: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for adjusting a timer mechanism based on radio frequency (RF) conditions of a network connecting source and destination devices are provided. Initially, data packets transmitted by the source device are assigned an ordering. This ordering is compared to an actual order in which the data packets are received at the destination device to ascertain whether any data packets were missing due to RF conditions. A negative response indicating missing, or lost, data packets may be returned, thereby invoking the source device to retransmit the data packets identified as missing. The device(s) may compute a probability of packet-loss (utilizing a recorded history of the transmitted packets in conjunction with the data packets actually received) and utilize the packet-loss probability to dynamically tune a time-interval of the timer mechanism. Upon expiration of the time-interval, the timer mechanism instructs the source device to retransmit the initial data packets.

摘要: A method is disclosed for implementing an overlay carrier frequency in a wireless coverage area in response to low load in the coverage area. Normally, an carrier frequency may be added in response to high load. However, the disclosed method involves adding a carrier frequency in response to low load, as the addition of a carrier may advantageously increase the likelihood of soft handoff in certain situations, and as low load may facilitate operation on the added carrier without the need to add expensive supporting infrastructure that would typically be added to support full operation on an added carrier frequency.

摘要: Methods and systems provide dynamic determination of a control-channel bit rate. An access node provides service on a carrier comprising active and idle timeslots, active timeslots comprising a data channel for carrying a control channel at a bit rate that can be set to a lower value or a higher value, and traffic channels. The access node determines whether the number of active timeslots over a time period is less than a first threshold. If so, the access node sets the bit rate to the lower value. If not, the access node sets the bit rate to the higher value if at least one of the following is true: (a) control-channel occupancy exceeds a second threshold, (b) the amount of data in a traffic buffer exceeds a third threshold, and (c) control-channel occupancy exceeds a fourth threshold and the amount of data in the traffic buffer exceeds a fifth threshold.

摘要: An access network may identify paging areas based on a reference location (e.g., a mobile station's last known location), where each paging area includes at least one coverage area. The access network may then determine paging-channel occupancies for coverage areas in at least identified paging area. In turn, the access network may adjust a given identified paging area based on the determined paging-channel occupancies, resulting in an adjusted paging area. For example, the access network may add coverage areas to the given identified paging area and/or remove coverage areas from the given identified paging area based on the paging-channel occupancies for those coverage areas. Thereafter, the access network may page a mobile station associated with the reference location in the adjusted paging area.
