Abstract: A gas turbine engine and a method of operating the gas turbine engine is provided. The gas turbine engine includes a fan having a plurality of fan blades, a turbomachine operably coupled to the fan for driving the fan, a nacelle surrounding and at least partially enclosing the fan, the nacelle defining an inlet and a longitudinal axis, and an inlet pre-swirl feature located upstream of the plurality of fan blades, the inlet pre-swirl feature attached to or integrated into the nacelle. The method includes determining, by one or more computing devices, a thrust demand for the gas turbine engine, and in response to the thrust demand, controlling, by the one or more computing devices, a rotational speed of the fan and an angle of the inlet pre-swirl feature with respect to the longitudinal axis of the nacelle.

Abstract: Casings and methods for manufacturing casings are provided. For example, a casing defining radial, axial, and circumferential directions is provided. The casing comprises an annular inner wall and an annular outer wall, each extending along the axial direction, with the outer wall radially spaced apart from the inner wall. The casing also comprises an auxetic structure extending from the inner wall to the outer wall and including a plurality of lattice elements. Each lattice element extends circumferentially and radially from the inner to the outer wall, and the lattice elements are axially spaced apart from one another. The auxetic structure may define at least one aperture for fluid flow from one portion to another of the auxetic structure and/or may be configured to vary the thermal characteristics of the casing along the axial direction. The casing may be integrally formed as a single monolithic component, e.g., by additive manufacturing.

Abstract: A system for inserting and orienting a probe into a machine includes a probe, a cable insertion unit, and a computer communicatively coupled to both the probe and cable insertion unit. The probe includes at least one sensor and a cable. Further, the at least one sensor produces at least one signal. The cable insertion unit is configured to orient and feed the probe. The computer includes an installed digital model of the machine. Further, the computer is configured to receive the at least one signal from the probe and produce a location model. The location model includes at least one of a two dimensional or three dimensional model representing the probe's real-time location relative to the machine. As such, the cable insertion unit orients and feeds the probe into the machine under the guidance of the computer.

Abstract: An automated fiber placement assembly forms a component by the placement of separate or multiple layers of fiber tows. The automated fiber placement assembly comprises a cutter assembly defining a cut shape. A backplate is spaced from the first cutter assembly against which cutter assembly can cut the fiber tows. The fiber tows define a longitudinal axis and are fed between the first cutter assembly and the backplate in a feed direction. The cutter head assembly is rotatable and movable to vary the orientation of the cutter assembly in order to define different cut shapes non-orthogonal to the longitudinal axis.
