Abstract: The invention relates to a component of a gas turbine engine which has a fiber-composite material having a multiplicity of rovings, wherein at least one roving of the fiber-composite material along the spatial extent thereof has a variable cross section, at least two rovings have in each case a dissimilar cross section and/or the at least one roving follows a variable direction and the at least one roving is deposited by means of tailored fiber placement. The invention also relates to a method of a component.

Abstract: A system is disclosed for use in additively manufacturing a structure. The system may include an additive manufacturing machine, a memory having computer-executable instructions stored thereon, and a processor. The processor may be configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to determine a plurality of tension vectors to be generated within the structure, and to generate a plan for manufacturing the structure. The plan may include tool paths that arrange continuous fibers within the structure to generate the plurality of tension vectors. The processor may also be configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to cause the additive manufacturing machine to follow the plan and manufacture the structure.

The apparatus further comprises a tape heater (150, 250, 650) to in use apply heat to a tape; and a tape spreader (100, 1, 200, 600) to in use to apply contact pressure to the heated tape to thereby spread the tape.

Abstract: A flexible composite driveshaft formed by automated fiber placement includes a first region extending longitudinally about an axis and having a substantially constant first diameter and a second region adjacent to the first region. The second region includes a first diaphragm extending radially outward from the first region about a circumference of the driveshaft and a second diaphragm extending radially outward from the first region about the circumference of the driveshaft. The first and second regions each include a plurality of strips of unidirectional fiber tape, wherein the plurality of strips is arranged in a plurality of stacked layers and wherein a first portion of the plurality of strips is oriented in a circumferential direction. At least one of the circumferentially-oriented strips of unidirectional fiber tape is positioned between the first and second diaphragms and comprises a plurality of folds formed about the circumference of the driveshaft.

The actuator cylinder comprises, a composite cylinder body, the composite cylinder body being axi-symmetric across at least a longitudinal axis. In embodiments, the composite cylinder body can include, a first plurality of plies laid in a first direction relative to the longitudinal axis and second plurality of plies laid in a second direction relative to the longitudinal axis different from the first direction to form a hollow chamber. The actuator cylinder can include a first metallic reinforcing ring and a second metallic reinforcing ring disposed at respective axial ends of the cylinder body configured to anchor the first plurality of plies and provide an axial reaction under axial stress and configured to provide load transfer from the cylinder body to one or more adjacent actuator components.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the additive manufacturing of three-dimensional objects are disclosed. Two or more materials are extruded simultaneously as a composite, with at least one material in liquid form and at least one material in a solid continuous strand completely encased within the liquid material. A means of curing the liquid material after extrusion hardens the composite. A part is constructed using a series of extruded composite paths. The strand material within the composite contains specific chemical, mechanical, or electrical characteristics that instill the object with enhanced capabilities not possible with only one material.

Abstract: A fiber placement device includes an accumulation portion that stores and discharges a reinforcing fiber bundle including: a movable roller guided by a guide mechanism able to be moved in a constant movable range; a cylinder; a piston arranged within the cylinder; a coupling member coupling the movable roller and the piston; and an adjustment portion adjusting a force applied to the piston within the cylinder by discharging fluid from a space with the cylinder sealed on a side opposite the coupling member with respect to the piston within the cylinder or supplying the fluid into the space, the fluid is discharged from the space within the cylinder to apply a force to the piston to move the piston, a force is also applied to the movable roller through the coupling member to move the movable roller and thus a tension is applied to the reinforcing fiber bundle.
