The communication system comprises a smart antenna module, a speed sensor, and a beam steering module. The smart antenna module may be situated on the mobile station, the base station, or a combination thereof. The smart antenna module generates at least one initial antenna pattern. The speed sensor is configured to determine a speed of a mobile station. The beam steering module generates an operating antenna pattern that is different from the initial antenna pattern. The operating antenna pattern is affected by changes in the speed of the mobile station.

Wireless communication device antenna matching circuit tuning responsive to power control signals, and, optionally, responsive to received signal quality indicators in a traffic channel. Systems and methods are provided that increase the antenna efficiency in either the transmit frequency or the receive frequency as needed, based on fading and environmental conditions, non-ideal antenna efficiency balance, mobile station forward versus reverse link usage and system forward versus reverse link usage. The antenna efficiency may be changed incrementally or may be optimized completely for the transmit frequency or the receive frequency. The re-balancing is accomplished by tuning the antenna matching circuit. One way to tune the antenna matching circuit is to apply a voltage to a ferro-electric capacitor in the matching circuit, thereby changing the capacitance of the ferro-electric capacitor, thereby changing the impedance of the antenna system.

If the neighboring wireless communication devices receive the periodic discovery channel message transmission above a pre-defined received power threshold and successfully decode the periodic discovery channel message, then the transmitting wireless communication device is added to the neighboring wireless communication devices neighboring device list. After receiving the periodic discovery channel messages from all of the neighboring wireless communication devices, a wireless communication device is able to identify all of its immediate neighboring devices and form its neighboring device list. Based on detecting periodic discovery channel message transmissions, a wireless communication device periodically updates its neighboring device list with new additions or removals of neighboring wireless communication devices.

The UAV UE device transmits random access request message using the selected UAV preamble and the base station responds with a random access response message indicating whether access is granted to the UAV UE device.
