    摘要: A rotary drag bit includes a bit body having a face and an axis, a plurality of blades extending radially and longitudinally outward from the face, and at least one split cutter set. The split cutter set includes a plurality of cutters, where at least two of the cutters are primary and/or kerfing cutters located on different blades of the plurality of blades. The pair of primary and/or kerfing cutters of the split cutter set may be located substantially the same radial distance from a center line, or axis of rotation, of the bit and located at substantially the same longitude, or elevation, on the bit as one another, or follow substantially the same rotational or helical cutting path as each other. In addition, at least one backup cutter may be located substantially the same radial distance from a center line, or axis of rotation, of the bit and located at substantially the same longitude, or elevation, on the bit as one or both primary and/or kerfing cutters, or follow substantially the same rotational or helical path as one or both of the primary and/or kerfing cutters. The cutters of a split cutter set may be configured and oriented to provide improved bit life and reduced stress on the cutters. Other embodiments of rotary drag bits are also provided, including methods therefor.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for reaming or enlarging a borehole using a bi-center bit with a stability-enhanced design. The cutters on the pilot bit section of the bi-center bit are placed and oriented to generate a lateral force vector longitudinally offset from, but substantially radially aligned with, the much larger lateral force vector generated by the reamer bit section. These two aligned force vectors thus tend to press the bit in the same lateral direction (which moves relative to the borehole sidewall as the bit rotates) along its entire longitudinal extent so that a single circumferential area of the pilot bit section gage rides against the sidewall of the pilot borehole, resulting in a reduced tendency for the bit to cock or tilt with respect to the axis of the borehole. Further, the pilot bit section includes enhanced gage pad area to accommodate this highly-focused lateral loading, particularly that attributable to the dominant force vector generated by the reamer bit section, so that the pilot borehole remains in-gage and round in configuration, providing a consistent longitudinal axis for the reamer bit section to follow.

    摘要: Systems, program product, and methods are provided which include analyzing the drillability of a subterranean formation and a database of performance characteristics for drilling bits to facilitate bit design optimization and selection for that formation. Using component subterranean formation data, computer models can be generated for the drillability of a target section in terms of physical, mechanical, and micro-structural properties, and for postulated suitable drilling bit performance characteristics based on physical, mechanical, and micro-structural properties of the target section. The drilling bit performance characteristics are then updated by quantifying effects of the drilling system to be employed. Each performance characteristic can be normalized and plotted on its own axis for easy comparison. Next, a candidate drilling bit design is selected from a library of computer models of drilling bit characteristics for a suite of drilling bit designs. An optimization of the drilling bit design may be also performed.
