Abstract: A well cleanup process involves removing an impermeable filter cake from a formation face with thermochemical and chelating agents to allow formation fluids to flow from a reservoir to a wellbore. The method may be used with oil and water-based drilling fluids with varied weighting agents, e.g., bentonite, calcium carbonate, or barite. Such thermochemical agents may involve two salts, e.g., NO2− and NH4+, which, when mixed together, can generate pressure and heat, in addition to hot H2O and/or N2. For example, the thermochemical agents may comprise Na+, K+, Li+, Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and/or Ba2+ with NO2− and NH4+ with F−, Cl−, Br−, I−, CO32−, NO3−, ClO4−, and/or −OH. The thermochemical agents in combination with a chelator such as EDTA can removed the filter cake after 6 hours with a removal efficiency of 89 wt % for the barite filter cake in water based drilling fluid, exploiting the generation of a pressure pulse and heat which may disturb the filter cake and/or enhance barite dissolution and polymer degradation.

Abstract: Amidoamine-based gemini surfactants having dual chains connected via an alkenylene or alkynylene linker. Each chain contains a quaternary ammonium head group and an ethoxylated alkyl tail. A water-based drilling fluid containing the gemini surfactant is also provided. As examined by linear swelling and free swelling tests, the gemini surfactant is effective in reducing clay swelling.

Abstract: A method for predicting formation permeability by measuring diffusional tortuosity in several directions by pulse gradient NMR. The method comprises evaluating an anisotropic diffusion coefficient by pulsed gradient NMR, determining diffusional tortuosity from the restricted diffusion data, supplementing the NMR results with resistivity and sonic logging data, measuring anisotropic tortuosity and porosity by resistivity and sonic data and combining all components in a single fitting model. The 11-coefficient model is trained to recognize the true values of permeability by comparing the real oil permeabilities measured in a library of oil-carrying rock cores with the NMR, resistivity and sonic correlates. The fitting coefficients are extracted by minimizing the discrepancy between the laboratory measured permeabilities and the predicted values combining all rapid logging information components with the agreement-maximizing weights.

Abstract: A method is described for removing a barite-quartz and a calcite-quartz filter cake from a well bore. The method involves contacting the filter cake with a first composition comprising NH4F, NaBrO3, NH4Cl, and NaNO2. The NH4Cl and NaNO2 react exothermically, and the heat produced drives the endothermic reaction of NH4F and NaBrO3, which produces HF for dissolution of the quartz in the filter cake. Filter cake comprising barite may be further treated with a second composition comprising a converting agent and a chelating agent. Filter cake comprising calcite may be treated with a first composition having an excess of NH4Cl and NaBrO3, which react to produce HCl for calcite dissolution.

Abstract: A fracture geometry mapping method includes determining a value of a diffusive tortuosity in a first direction in a first rock sample from a subterranean formation with one or more hardware processors; determining a value of a diffusive tortuosity in a second direction in the first rock sample from the subterranean formation with the one or more hardware processors, the second direction orthogonal to the first direction in the first rock sample; determining a value of a diffusive tortuosity in third direction in the first rock sample from the subterranean formation with the one or more hardware processors, the third direction orthogonal to both the first direction and the second direction in the first rock sample; comparing the values of the diffusive tortuosities in the in the first direction, the second direction, and the third direction; and based on the comparison, generating a first fracture network map of the subterranean formation, the first fracture network map including a first plurality of anisotropic fracture pathways.

Abstract: An drilling mud composition is described, which includes an aqueous base fluid, a viscosifier, and a weighting material The drilling mud composition also includes an anti-sagging agent that comprises a dimethylamino methyl ester, such as methyl 5-(dimethylamino)-2-methyl-5-oxopentanoate. The anti-sagging agent may be used to prevent barite sagging, where barite is used as a weighting material. Small amounts of the anti-sagging agent may be used to maintain a low sag factor while drilling, and without causing unwanted increases in viscosity. The anti-sagging agent is effective for both vertical and inclined wellbores.

Abstract: A drilling fluid composition includes an aqueous base fluid, 0.01 to 10 wt. % of a date palm leaves extract (DPLE), 1 to 10 wt. % of clay particles, and 0.01 to 1 wt. % of a base, where each wt. % based on a total weight of the drilling fluid composition. The DPLE is homogenously disposed on surfaces of the clay particles. The clay particles disposed with the DPLE are present in the drilling fluid composition in the form of a composite. A pellet made from the clay particles treated with the DPLE has a swelling value at least 75% less than a swelling value of the pellet in an aqueous composition that does not contain the DLPE. A method of making the drilling fluid composition.
