    摘要: Data transfer is effected by a remote packet-communicating device to facilitate the transfer of data from a data source to another device that is local to the remote device. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, a host server provides access to a user's data source (e.g., at a registered user's PC) in response to a request from a remote packet-communicating device. The remote device directs the host server to facilitate the transfer of data from the data source to another device that is local to the remote device. In one implementation, a remote device and a media playback device are in communication on a local area network (LAN), and the remote device controls the communication of data from the data source to the media playback device, by interacting with a host server via a packet-communicating network and a gateway at the LAN.

According to an example embodiment of the present invention, a network-based server implements a routing application at a user's content or content source to respond to content requests from remote packet-based devices to facilitate the transfer of protected content. The content is transferred in accordance with applicable rights associated with the content. In some instances, the content is transferred in a protected format; in other instances, the content is transferred in a re-protected format; and in other instances, the content is not transferred as requested, where rights associated with the content prohibit or otherwise restrict the transfer.

    摘要: Access is provided for different types of media content provided by disparate publishers, and in formats corresponding to operating characteristics of respective user devices. As consistent with one or more example embodiments herein, media content access is filtered for users requesting access via different user devices, based upon characteristics of the device to which the access is provided, user subscription data and publisher-specific criteria. A user-specific storefront interface is generated for each of a multitude of users, based upon the filtering. Each storefront interface indicates media content that can be displayed at the device to which access is requested, and identifies media content to which the user does and does not have subscription access. The user-specific storefront interfaces are presented at respective user devices, and media content is delivered to each device in response to selections made via the user-specific storefront interfaces.

According to an example embodiment of the present invention, data is routed to a remote (e.g., mobile) user device over a packet-communicating network having a plurality of communication links. When the transfer of data to the remote use device is requested or otherwise initiated, a host server selects one of the plurality of communications links available for transferring the data to the remote user device. The host server then uses routing functions (e.g., software) at a registered data source to access and transfer data from the registered data source to the remote user device.

    摘要: A videoconferencing system includes a videoconferencing arrangement with the capability to automatically determine whether a videoconferencing or conventional telephone call is being initiated. In one embodiment, a portable telephone unit includes a preprogrammed memory storing codes that indicate whether a telephone number input to the telephone unit should be used to initiate a videoconferencing or conventional telephone call. If a conventional telephone call is being initiated, the video processing functions of the videoconferencing unit are not activated and the user proceeds with the conventional telephone call. If a videoconferencing call is being initiated, the videoconferencing unit establishes a data connection with a compatible device at the remote end of the communications channel and proceeds with the videoconference. In another embodiment, a portable telephone unit interfaces with a remotely located switch circuit and the switch circuit determines whether the telephone call input to the portable telephone unit should be used to initiate a videoconferencing call or a conventional telephone call. The switch circuit includes a preprogrammed memory storing codes that indicate whether the telephone number input to the telephone unit should be used to initiate a videoconferencing or conventional telephone call.

    摘要: A computer workstation receives multiple audio input streams over a network in an audio conference. The audio input streams are kept separate by storing them in different queues. Digital samples from each of the queues are transferred to an audio adapter card 28 for output. A digital signal processor 46 on the audio adapter card multiplies each audio stream by its own weighting parameter, before summing the audio streams together for output. Thus the relative volume of each of the audio output streams can be controlled. For each block of audio data, the volume is calculated and displayed to the user, allowing the user to see the volume in each audio input stream independently. The user is also provided with volume control for each audio input stream, which effectively adjusts the weighting parameter, thereby allowing the user to alter the relative volumes of each speaker in the conference.
