摘要:
Vented shield systems for plasma arc torches are provided that comprise a shield cup body defining a distal end portion, a vented retainer secured to the distal end portion of the shield cup body, and a shield cap secured to the vented retainer. The vented retainer defines at least one vent passageway that directs a flow of secondary gas inward toward the shield cap, and the vented shield system blocks at least a portion of molten metal from contacting components, such as a tip or nozzle, of the plasma arc torch. The shield cap may comprise a mechanized cap, a drag cap, a gouging cap, or a deflector cap, among others. Accordingly, various shield caps may be employed without removal or replacement of the vented retainer. The same vented retainer may be used throughout a variety of plasma arc torch applications.

摘要:
A detection system for a cutting torch for use in connection with a workpiece. The detection system has an electrode and a tip. A housing supporting the tip and the electrode provides relative movement therebetween and allows electrical contact between the tip and the electrode. A sensor circuit senses when the electrode and the tip are in electrical contact. The sensor circuit generates a switch control signal when the electrode and tip are in electrical contact. A power supply provides a first voltage and a second voltage such that a potential voltage difference is established between the electrode and the and/or workpiece. A magnitude of the first voltage is less than a magnitude of the second voltage. A first switch selectively provides the second voltage to the electrode in response to the switch control signal whereby the potential voltage difference between the electrode and the tip and/or workpiece corresponds to the second voltage when the switch control signal indicates that the electrode and tip are in electrical contact.

A plasma arc torch has a threadless electrode-cathode locking assembly, a one-piece tip assembly, and a rotational contact starting mechanism. The cathode and electrode of the locking assembly are configured such that relative rotation of the electrode with respect to the cathode causes the electrode to move in an axial direction relative to the cathode for locking the electrode in fixed axial and rotational position with respect to the cathode. The inner wall of the one-piece tip assembly is configured to receive the forward end of the electrode in a non-contact position. Rotation of the electrode with respect to the tip causes an arcing formation on the electrode to contact an arcing chamber within the cavity. Rotation of the electrode away from the tip generatesa pilot arc in the arcing chamber.

A solenoid control and safety circuit suitable for use in connection with contact start, plasma-arc torches. The system monitors a voltage to determine when to open an air control solenoid as part of a contact starting process. If a proper voltage is sensed, a gas solenoid is opened to allow airflow to separate the contact starting elements. The system also includes a circuit that monitors a gas pressure switch to determine whether sufficient pressure exists to separate the contact start elements after a contact start process has been initiated. The circuit removes power if it senses insufficient pressure. Also disclosed is a circuit that monitors a differential voltage between the electrode and the tip to determine if the elements remain in contact after airflow has been provided to the torch head.
