The active matrix type liquid crystal display device has a structure in which a counter electrode is provided adjacently to a video signal line, an insulating layer is provided between the video signal line and the counter electrode provided adjacently to the video signal line, the video signal line and the counter electrode are provided with a superimposition portion, and a light shielding layer is disposed within a pixel area in only a direction substantially parallel to a scan signal line. Alternatively, the light shielding layer is formed as a pattern opened and includes a part in the width direction of an area where the counter voltage signal line is formed.
