Abstract: A waveguide display includes a waveguide, three input gratings configured to couple display light in different respective colors into the waveguide, one or more first middle gratings configured to receive and redirect the display light from the three input gratings, a second middle grating configured to diffract, at two or more regions of the second middle grating, the display light from the one or more first middle gratings, and an output grating configured to couple the display light from each of the two or more regions of the second middle grating out of the waveguide at two or more regions of the output grating.

Abstract: A near-eye imaging system includes a light source, a waveguide, a scanner, and a sensor. The light source is configured to emit light. The waveguide includes an output coupler. The scanner is configured to direct the light to the output coupler at varying scan angles. The waveguide confines the light to guide the light to the output coupler. The output coupler has negative optical power and is configured to direct the light to exit the waveguide as expanding illumination light toward an eyebox region. The sensor is configured to generate a tracking signal in response to returning light incident on the sensor via the scanner and via the output coupler.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for a waveguide system may be used to support eye tracking in a head mounted display. The waveguide system may be positioned in a user's field of view and within a lens assembly of an HMD to capture light that is reflected from an eye. The waveguide system may include a waveguide, a first diffraction grating, and a second diffraction grating. The first diffraction grating may be configured to in-couple light into the waveguide from an eyebox region. The first diffraction grating may be a rolled diffraction grating having slanted grating planes that receive light from a larger surface area and direct the light onto a smaller surface area. The second diffraction grating may receive the light from the first diffraction grating in the waveguide and may be configured to out-couple the light from the waveguide onto an image sensor.

Abstract: A grating coupler may be fabricated by exposing a photopolymer layer to grating forming light for forming periodic refractive index variations in the photopolymer layer. The photopolymer layer may be exposed to apodization light for reducing an amplitude of the periodic refractive index variations in a spatially-selective manner. The apodization may also be achieved or facilitated by subjecting outer surface(s) of the photopolymer layer to a chemically reactive agent that causes the refractive index contrast to be reduced near the surface(s) of application. The apodized refractive index profile of the gratings facilitates the reduction of optical crosstalk between different gratings of the grating coupler.

Abstract: A waveguide display includes a waveguide and a grating coupler configured to couple display light into or out of the waveguide. The grating coupler includes at least a first grating layer and a second grating layer arranged in a stack. The first grating layer is characterized by a first thickness and includes a first transmission VBG configured to diffract display light of a first wavelength from a first field of view. The second grating layer is characterized by a second thickness greater than the first thickness and includes a second transmission VBG configured to diffract display light of the first wavelength from a second field of view greater than the first field of view.
