Abstract: A process for reducing the interfacial tension between a hydrocarbon fluid and a surfactant mixture during chemical enhanced oil recovery includes introducing a surfactant mixture solution comprising an anionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, a brine solution, and a co-solvent to a hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir under conditions of a salinity of greater than or equal to 50,000 mg/L, a hardness of greater than or equal to 2,500 mg/L, and a temperature of greater than or equal to 90° C., thereby reducing the interfacial tension at a liquid-liquid interface of the hydrocarbon fluid and the surfactant mixture solution. The anionic surfactant comprises organo sulfate. The cationic surfactant comprises quaternary ammonium, brominated trimethylammonium, chloride trimethylammonium, or combinations thereof. The nonionic surfactant comprises polyoxyethylene fatty acid ester, phenylated ethoxylate, or combinations thereof.

Abstract: Provided is a composition that may include a mixture of an ionic liquid and a surfactant in an aqueous composition, where a carbonaceous hydrocarbon-bearing formation has a wettability value and comprises hydrocarbons, where there is an interfacial tension value between the aqueous composition and hydrocarbons present in the carbonaceous hydrocarbon-bearing formation, where the aqueous solution may be configured to modify the wettability value of the carbonaceous hydrocarbon-bearing formation from a first value to a second value that is more water-wet than the first value, and where the presence of the ionic liquid in the aqueous composition may not substantially impact the value for interfacial tension between the hydrocarbons in the carbonaceous hydrocarbon-bearing formation and the aqueous composition. Further provided is a method that may introduce the aqueous composition into a carbonaceous hydrocarbon-bearing formation.

Abstract: Compositions that include cationic surfactants and methods of synthesizing compositions that include cationic surfactants. The surfactants include a quaternary amine and a saturated or unsaturated alkyl chain with 4 to 28 carbons. The surfactants can be generated by reacting a fatty acid modified with an amino alkyl group and an epihalohydrin in the presence of a base. The cationic surfactants can be generated by reacting a fatty acid modified with an amino alkyl group, an epihalohydrin, and a carboxylic acid. The cationic surfactants can be generated by reacting a carboxylic acid, an epihalohydrin, and a catalyst to afford a halo-substituted alkyl ester, followed by reacting the halo-substituted alky ester with a fatty acid modified with an amino alkyl group.

Abstract: Surfactant mixtures include a cationic surfactant, an anionic surfactant, and a nonionic surfactant in a brine solution. The cationic surfactant may include at least one quaternary ammonium, at least one brominated trimethylammonium, or combinations thereof. The anionic surfactant may include at least one organosulfate. The nonionic surfactant may include the nonionic surfactant comprised of a polyoxyethylene fatty acid ester, a phenylated ethoxylate, or combinations thereof. The surfactant mixtures may be incorporated into methods for reducing the interfacial tension between the surfactant mixture and oily fluids during chemical enhanced oil recovery. The methods for reducing the interfacial tension may include introducing the surfactant mixture comprising a cationic surfactant, an anionic surfactant, and a nonionic surfactant in a brine solution to a hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir, thereby reducing the interfacial tension at a liquid-liquid interface of the surfactant mixture and the fluid.
