In a system and method for a non-contact measurement of the fly height of a slider above a magnetic data storage medium using electrostatic force, a slider with a read/write head flies over a magnetic data storage medium. A series of distinct voltages are applied between the slider and the magnetic data storage medium, and corresponding read-back signals are recorded. Using the recorded read-back signals, coefficients for an empirical curve-fit equation are calculated. The coefficients are normalized and converted into a fly height measurement.

In one embodiment, a conductive connection is made between two metal layers separated by an intermediate insulating layer by providing vias between one of the metal layers and the insulating layer. A conductor, such as a conductive sphere made of gold is disposed into the vias and pressed so as to create a conductive connection between the metal layers. In a further embodiment, vias are created in both metal layers. In such a case, a fixture support may be provided so that when the conductive sphere is pressed into the vias, it is also pressed into the support to improve the conductive connection.

A pair of grounding pads are mounted on either side of the leading edge of the gimbal tongue. A first limiter tab is coupled to the leading edge of the gimbal tongue and a second limiter tab is coupled to the trailing edge of the gimbal tongue. Notches on either side of the trailing edge limiter tab increase the strength of the tab. One or more cutouts allow the slider to be electrically coupled to bonding pads on the opposite side of the gimbal tongue. Angled slots at the juncture of the gimbal cross bar and the gimbal tongue relieve stress on the gimbal.

Gimbal designs are provided that minimize adverse dynamic performance of a HDD suspension, particularly subsequent to head-disk-interface (HDI) interactions. The improvement of operational performance can be seen in graphical representations of the vibrational modes of a gimbal mounted slider subsequent to such HDI interactions. Each gimbal design includes a ramp limiter formed as two separated arms connected by one or two transverse bars and a routing of conducting traces that relieves stress and minimally contacts these bars.

A flexure mounted slider and its method of fabrication is described, wherein the slider is affixed to a pair of highly compliant, transverse (to the longitudinal axis of a load beam) crossbars whose common axis passes directly above the center of percussion of the slider. The location of the center of percussion of the slider relative to the flexure eliminates translational motion of the slider during HDI events, but not twisting motion in a pitch direction during normal operation, and thereby minimizes the transfer of kinetic energy between the slider and the flexure during HDI events with a hard disk. The high compliance of the flexure crossbars to twists in a pitch direction, as well as the compliance of the outriggers to bending, allows the slider to pass over irregularities in the disk during normal operations.

A system and method for adjusting the flying height of a magnetic head above a magnetic storage medium, such as a disk, is disclosed. A charging surface of the slider, separate from the read/write head, allows a charging electrical interconnect to apply an electrical charge to the slider. By acting as a quasi-parallel capacitor, the amount of spacing in the head-disk interface may be increased or decreased based on the amount of voltage applied. The slider may be electrically isolated from the suspension. Simultaneously, a heating element deforms the slider to further adjust the spacing between the read/write head and the disk surface. A feedback control system may monitor and control the head-disk spacing by measuring a temperature or other environmental conditions surrounding the slider and disk.
