Abstract: An electronic librarian and filing system includes an article storage unit, article locator mechanism, article retrieval mechanism, and electronic control unit. The article storage unit has a receptacle storing articles, such as individual CD's on edge, in successive side-by-side compartments. The article locator mechanism disposed in the receptacle is movable relative to the successive compartments to identify the location of each of the successive compartments and thus of the articles stored therein. The article retrieval mechanism carried with the article locator mechanism is operable to partially remove a selected one of the CD's from its compartment so that it can subsequently be fully removed from the receptacle by a user. The electronic control unit is coupled to the article locator mechanism. The electronic control unit includes a keyboard to use to input information which identifies CD's stored in the article storage unit and their unique locations, a display to output such information, a microprocessor to process inputted information and the information obtained from reading the locations of the CD's by the article retrieval mechanism, and a memory to store the information which can be accessed via the microprocessor by use of the keyboard and reviewed on the display.

Abstract: A compact disk storage and dispensing rack includes a base and, rising from the base in a use position of the rack, a support rod. A plurality of storage receptacles each for accommodating one of a plurality of compact disks is mounted on successive sections of the support rod for pivoting about mutually parallel axes along movement planes that are parallel to one another and inclined to a predetermined extent with respect to the horizontal as considered in the use position of the rack. Each of the storage receptacles is hollow and has a region that is remote from the support rod and is open to permit egress and ingress of the respective compact disk out of and into the respective receptacle. Each of the storage receptacles is movable between its storage position in which the remote region is situated higher and a dispensing position in which it is situated lower than the region surrounding the support rod. Each of the storage receptacles accommodates the respective compact disk with freedom of at least limited movement out of the other region and back so that the compact disk tends to slide out of the respective storage receptacle in the course of its movement towards its dispensing position. This movement is limited by respective detaining portions of the respective storage rack that are to be forced out of the path of movement of the disk during its ingress and particularly during its egress. A vertical wall serves as an abutment retaining the storage receptacles in their storage positions.

Abstract: A data library system is disclosed, having a lightweight carousel featuring a system of guide blocks and springs to hold tape cartridges securely but permit their removal and replacement by bidirectional manipulators. The manipulators carry hinged hooks that can be used to push cartridges radially outward, or upon flexing of the hinges, expand to grip the cartridge for pulling radially inward. A rotating express port is disclosed for addition or removal of single cartridges without the need to dismount the carousel from the library system. The express port is designed to prevent cartridges from being inserted in the wrong orientation, and a reflective optical sensor is used to confirm that each cartridge in the carousel is properly placed. Optical sensors also verify proper rotation of the carousel, index the carousel, and detect the presence of cartridges in the tape drives and express port. The carousel carries drive pins which seat in tapered holes in an index plate, and is driven by a zero-backlash belt.

Abstract: A storage file includes a cabinet enclosure with five closed and one open side. A tray is received in the cabinet enclosure. The tray is selectively moveable by sliding between fully opened and fully closed positions. A retractable door is mounted to the cabinet enclosure. A spring loaded linkage connects the retractable door to the tray. When the tray is opened, the door retracts, by operation of the linkage, into the cabinet enclosure exposing the tray and its contents. When the tray is closed, the door is closed by operation of the linkage thereby sealing the contents in the tray within the cabinet enclosure.
