摘要： A data storage disk cartridge having a dual housing structure includes an inner housing that contains a disk, and an outer housing that contains the inner housing. The inner housing is at least partially removable from the outer housing for insertion into a disk drive. The outer housing remains external to the disk drive, however, except for a portion that is inserted into the drive to provide a docking channel for retraction of the inner housing. A shutter on the inner housing covers a portion of the disk, but is manipulable by the disk drive to uncover the disk and allow drive access. The dual housing structure of the cartridge is capable of significantly improving disk and drive reliability, particularly for recording applications that require higher areal recording densities, such as near field optical recording. In particular, the disk cartridge reduces the accumulation of debris on the disk and drive components. The dual-housing disk cartridge provides a system of partially redundant barriers that significantly reduce the possibility of debris accumulation. The barriers form a hierarchy of cleanliness that stands between the outside environment and the disk and drive components. Consequently, in a preferred mode, the disk is never exposed to the outside environment. The reduced amounts of debris contribute to more consistent optical and mechanical performance of the disk and drive, and thereby enhance data storage reliability.

摘要： An improved access door for magnetic tape library systems and the like, including a pivotable cartridge-receiving receptacle for facilitating the insertion and removal of cartridges into and out of the system. The receptacle is pivotably mounted to be rotatable between a first position extending at least part way out of the system housing, and a second position wherein the receptacle is at least partially disposed within the housing. A trip lever actuated latch holds the receptacle in the second position, and a spring-loaded lifter rotates the receptacle away from the second position when the latch is released. A damping cam and resilient roller control the rotation of the receptacle and provide limit stops therefor. Optical sensors indicate receptacle position and the presence or absence of a cartridge in the receptacle.

摘要： An improved carousel-type magnetic tape library system including a pivotable cartridge-receiving door for facilitating the insertion and removal of cartridges into the system and a cylindrical magazine carried by a turntable rotatably mounted to a turntable plate secured to a base casting. The turntable includes a sprocket wheel that is engaged by a drive belt or chain connected to a stepper motor affixed to the base plate. Affixed to the sprocket is a shutter plate having a plurality of notches in its perimeter for detection by an optical-indexing sensor. The apparatus also includes a carousel-indexing sensor and a cartridge-in-carousel and cartridge-orientation sensor. Disposed within the central cavity of the carousel magazine unoccupied by cartridges is a cartridge-onloading/offloading mechanism which is rotatably mounted concentric with the carousel turntable. Disposed on a side of the carousel opposite the door is a dual tape drive assembly including modular tape drive units mounted to the base plate. The apparatus further includes a power supply, an associated electronic subsystem, and a cooling fan.

摘要： A print hammer apparatus is disclosed which comprises a resilient member having a fixed end and a movable end, the movable end being movable between a cocked position and a striking position, a hammer affixed to the movable end and carried thereby over an arcuate path between the cocked position and the striking position, the hammer including an impact head at one end and a flag member at the other end, the flag member being of magnetic material and having a flag face with a surface which is at all points angularly disposed at an angle other than normal to the path, a stator pole piece having a pole face which matingly corresponds to the flag face, a magnetic side pole disposed laterally of the path, a permanent magnet coupled to the pole piece and to the side pole and operative to develop a magnetic force for causing the hammer to move against the influence of the resilient member and into the cocked position with the flag face engaging the pole face, and a coil disposed on the pole piece for momentarily developing a magnetic flux in opposition to the flux developed by the permanent magnet, thereby reducing the magnetic force and allowing the hammer to move along the path into the striking position under the influence of the resilient member, the resilient member being operative to thereafter return the hammer along the path to the cocked position whereby the flag face impacts the pole face and whereby the interaction of the angularly engaging faces and the magnetic relationships between the pole piece, the flag member and the side pole cause the hammer to experience substantially no contact bounce.

摘要： A disk drive system includes a disk drive controller system having separate head positioning and data transfer subsystems and supporting up to four disk drives, two of which may be removable and two of which may connect through a standard ST506 interface. The system provides a read and write protected cylinder for removably drive and a read only cylinder for removable drives which may store a unique serial number as well as other write protected data. Each removable disk drive may includes a register storing an identification code which may be used to control operation of the drive.
