    摘要: An apparatus and method for safely cannulating a blood vessels, including but not limited retinal blood vessels, is described. In one embodiment, the apparatus can consist of a micropipette/microcannula, micromanipulator and positioner mounted to a base, which is attached to a wrist rest commonly used in eye surgery. The micropipette/microcannula is connected to tubing such that a medication may be injected through the micropipette/microcannula into the blood vessel or conversely, a small quantity of material may be removed from a blood vessel. Alternatively, a catheter, wire or stent may be placed through the micropipette/microcannula to treat or diagnose an area remote from the insertion site. The ability to cannulate a retinal blood vessel should be efficacious in the treatment of vein and artery occlusion, ocular tumors and other retinal, vascular and optic nerve disorders that would benefit from diagnosis and/or treatment. In another embodiment, a self-sealing needle is provided which allows the perforation of a blood vessel or other structure and the minimization of hemorrhaging when the needle is withdrawn from the blood vessel/structure. Another embodiment discloses an ocular implant needle.

    摘要: An improved microkeratome includes a guide ring assembly for placement on the ocular globe and means for temporarily fixing the guide ring to the ocular globe. A cutting head contains an improved cutting blade having an arcuate cutting edge suitable for corneal resections. A vertical support assembly is connected to the guide ring and supports the cutting head for rotation about a horizontal axis such that rotation of the cutting head about the horizontal axis moves the cutting blade along an arcuate cutting path into engagement with the cornea of the ocular globe, whereby the arcuate cutting edge of the cutting blade cuts a substantially rounded corneal disk. An improved method related to the use of the arcuate cutting blade is also provided.

    摘要: An improved intraocular lens forceps, including a first and second arm, the first arm has a first handle and a first lens engagement blade spaced from the first handle. The second arm has a second handle and a second lens engagement blade spaced from the second handle. The blades extend generally longitudinally in laterally spaced relation and at opposite side of a bisecting plane. The first arm has a primary section and a secondary section. The secondary arm sections extend between the first handle and first blade. The second arm has a primary section and a secondary section, the secondary arm sections extend between the second handle and second blade. The blades are movable by the handles and arm sections between closed and open positions relative to the lens. The alarm primary sections extend in cross-over relation to define a cross-over locus, when the blades are in closed position; and the secondary arm sections extend generally longitudinally in substantially parallel and elongated relation, and with spacing therebetween less than about 3 mm.

    摘要: Intraocular pressure can be reduced by insertion of an intraocular shunt in the eye such that it forms a drainage pathway between the anterior chamber and a region of lower pressure. A hollow shaft that holds an intraocular shunt can be advanced through the anterior chamber. The sclera can be penetrated with the hollow shaft. A beveled tip of the shaft can be oriented such that a beveled surface thereof faces toward the Tenon's capsule when the beveled tip passes out of the sclera. After the beveled tip passes out of the sclera, at least a portion of the shunt can be advanced from the hollow shaft.

    摘要: A method is provided for treating a meibomian gland of an eyelid of a patient. In a particular embodiment, an obstruction in a meibomian gland and the orifice thereof can be alleviated; in another, a substance can be injected thereinto; in yet another, the gland can be aspirated. The method includes the step of inserting an elongated probe into a meibomian gland via an orifice thereinto. In some embodiments the probe can have a longitudinal lumen therethrough, with at least one distal hole through the probe wall in fluid communication with the lumen. The lumen can be used in concert with a source of suction for removing debris from the meibomian gland, and/or with a source of a fluid and pumping means, for injecting a substance into the meibomian gland.
