The method and apparatus relates to the production of turned workpieces on multi-station machine tools. In such machines rod stock is introduced into a clamping device (collet chuck) of the machine and is clamped thereby. A rod section is severed at a distance from the clamping device and the free end protruding from the clamping device is turned. In such a process a section from the rod stock is introduced into the clamping device, clamped fast there and severed, which section comprises a multiple of the machining length and in addition a clamping section sufficing for the clamping of one single machining length section. This multiple section is moved by sections corresponding in each case to the machining length section out of the clamping device. The rod stock is clamped fast during turning over a following machining length section in each case, the last machining length section being clamped fast by means of the provided additional clamping section. The machined workpiece is sawn from the clamped-fast residue of the multiple section in each case.

Stock feeding method and means are disclosed for feeding bar stock to an automatic machine tool and in particular a computer numeric controlled machine tool. A collet chuck attached to the hollow machine spindle includes jaws for gripping stock and jaw actuating means to operate the jaws between closed and open conditions. Stock is loaded into an elongated feed and actuating tube mounted for both axial, and rotational movement at the same rate as the machine spindle. The forward end of the feed tube is adapted for operation of the jaw actuating means upon axial movement. A chuck actuator is located to the rear of the machine spindle for rotatable support of the feed tube extending therethrough, and for axial movement of the tube for chuck operation. A stationary protective and support tube coaxially surrounds the rearwardly extending portion of the feed tube. The feed tube functions as a cylinder within which a short piston is mounted and is axially movable against the rear end of bar stock by fluid pressure supplied to the rear of the feed tube. After cut-off of an item from the bar stock, the cut-off tool, or other stop member, is positioned at the forward end of bar stock. The chuck jaws are opened to release the bar stock, and the stop member, under automatic machine control, is advanced. A programmed length of bar stock is fed through the chuck and the machine tool is programmed to reclose the chuck jaws to regrip the bar stock in preparation for machining another part.

A device for effecting at least one of a loading and unloading operation of a workpiece with respect to a machine tool. The device includes a base adapted to be mounted adjacent the machine tool and a tubular member. The tubular member includes an inner chamber and an elongate opening communicating with the inner chamber for receiving the workpiece. The inner chamber has one end adapted to communicate with a spindle of the machine tool and the tubular member is mounted for rotation with respect to the base. A sealing member is mounted for selective removal and sealing engagement with respect to the elongate opening and a source of pressurized air communicates with the chamber for moving the workpiece in at least one direction within the chamber when the sealing member is in sealing engagement around the elongate opening. A sensing device detects the presence of a workpiece in the machine tool spindle and generally includes support structure and first and second detection members operatively associated with a motion detection device. A wireless transmitter is mounted to the support structure and is electrically connected to the motion detection device for transmitting a signal indicating a proper position of the workpiece.

A bar feeding and handling machine. A frame bar is mounted in parallelism with the axis of a machine chuck. The chuck is adapted to support a workpiece. Link members are pivotally attached to the frame bar adjacent to opposite ends thereof. A pneumatic cylinder is pivotally attached to the link members to move between an advanced position aligned with the machine chuck and a retracted position. A pusher head mounted on a cylinder rod of the cylinder can engage the workpiece when in advanced position. The cylinder rod and the head are advanced to advance the workpiece. Another workpiece can be loaded into the chuck when the cylinder is in retracted position.
