摘要： A folding staircase for use in a door opening having a threshold. The folding staircase has a pair of stringers that have an upper end and a lower end that is adapted for contacting a ground surface. The stringers are spanned by at least one tread. A hinge is connected to a floor near the door opening and a threshold plate pivotally connected thereto is movable between a use position and a stowed position. The staircase may be provided with a lifting mechanism that biases the staircase and threshold plate toward their stowed positions. The lifting device provides a variable force that provides more rotational force when the staircase would require a user to bear more of its weight and less force when less of the weight of the staircase would be borne by a user.

摘要： A control apparatus for a folding ladder or stairway. The control apparatus comprises a control base attachable to a section of the ladder and a control arm pivotally attached to the control base. The control arm has a distal end which may be gripped by an operator to manipulate the ladder between folded and unfolded positions while the operator is positioned away from the ladder so that unexpected pivotation of ladder sections cannot result in the ladder sections striking the operator. A clamp may be attached to the ladder to retain the distal end of the control arm when not in use. The control arm is telescoping and may be positioned in any of a variety of extended positions. A lock is provided to lock the telescoping control arm at a desired length.

摘要： The present invention is a collapsible, folding emergency escape ladder having an attachment means for permanently affixing it to a window frame rough opening structural components that are present within the walls of all residential housed, a retention means for securing the ladder in the folded position, and a multiplicity of swivel link means for joining the multiplicity of ladder sections to one another. The attachment means for permanently affixing the emergency escape ladder to a window sill includes a rigid framework having attachment bolts/screws apertures disposed therein at predetermined locations that line up with the inner wall structural framework found surrounding windows in most, if not all, residential dwellings. The retention means for securing the ladder in the folded position includes a pin arrangement that may cooperate with a chain for gathering the collapsed foldable sections in a compact area next to the rigid framework attachment means. A preferred embodiment of the invention dispenses with the need for the gathering chain. Both embodiments are operated by the simple release of a pin thereby allowing a panic-stricken escapee simplicity and ease of deployment. The multiplicity of swivel link means for joining the multiplicity of ladder sections to one another are discreet lengths having apertures that line up and cooperate with apertures disposed in the side rails of individual ladder sections such that a free deployment rotation occurs between individual ladder sections in a vertical direction while eliminating swivel motion between individual ladder sections in all other directions except vertical. Another preferred embodiment of the invention utilizes curvature of the top portion of the top ladder section to form an enlarged bent hook to be used as hand rails during the initial descent from the window frame to the ladder.

A hand rail of the ladder is supported on a section of the ladder by spacers allowing the hand rail to be carried at a lateral distance from the ladder stile greater than the lateral space occupied by the counterbalance mechanism. A releasable catch for retaining two ladder parts in a selected position comprises two moveable catch members mounted on respective stiles, and interconnected together.

摘要： A collapsible ladder assembly suitable for installation on high-rise buildings and capable of modification to be architecturally unobstrusive and compatible with a variety of architectural designs is described. The ladder assembly comprises a frame member, two or more telescoping stile pair sections and a plurality of rung members. In the normal storage position the ladder is disposed entirely within the frame member with the telescoping stile members in the retracted position. The entire unit is adapted to fit within a window opening. In a emergency the ladder can be released to the extended position for use from inside a window whereby it falls on hinged arms down and away from the building at a distance sufficient to permit passage of a person between the building and the ladder. Release of one ladder actuates a release mechanism on the similarly mounted ladder on the floor below and so on, allowing an escape passage to a safe level or, if necessary, to the ground.
