    摘要: An air gun is mounted in a reaction mass having an impulse-transmitting ground-contact plate movably mounted below the mass. This mass is in face-to-face contact with the plate over the major portion of the entire upper surface of the contact plate. Confined liquid is not employed. The air gun is charged with pressurized gas and fired, discharging the pressurized gas into the narrow horizontal interface region between reaction mass and plate. Rapid expansion of the discharged gas between mass and plate causes an intensely powerful seismic impulse to be transmitted into the earth. The air gun has a firing chamber for holding a charge of pressurized gas, a movable shuttle for suddenly discharging the pressurized gas, including upper and lower pistons with a hollow member connecting these pistons. A pedestal assembly carrying said shuttle is mounted from above to the reaction mass and extends down into the hollow shuttle member. When this air gun is fired, the lower piston moves away from a peripheral seal at the lower end of the firing chamber suddenly discharging pressurized gas from a central location radially outwardly into the narrow horizontal interface region. By suspending the pedestal assembly from above, powerful seismic waves can be generated using a relatively short shuttle stroke, and the gun can be positioned near the impulse-transmitting plate for directly discharging the pressurized gas into the interface region between plate and reaction mass.

    摘要: The invention relates to seismic sources in which a shock wave is produced in a liquid mass by the implosion of a volume of vapor, particularly water vapor. According to the invention, the vapor to be imploded is formed inside a closed, flexible enclosure, surrounding an injection head, fitted with a vapor opening 103 capable of releasing vapor at 5 bars and 170.degree. C., controlled by an electromagnetic valve. Liquid nuclei are advantageously introduced into this vapor by means of a pipe for cold water which is under pressure and under the control of an electromagnetic valve, this water arriving in the cavity in order to exit through spray openings. These nuclei produce a vigorous drop in pressure inside the vapor, and hence an implosion and a shock wave, after which a pipe allows the condensate to be recovered. The invention is of use notably as a seismic marine source.

    摘要: A motor pump impels a substantial volume of water through a rotatable, slotted shutter to modulate the flow of impelled water. A pair of oppositely facing, radiating-piston surfaces is reciprocably displaced in response to the modulated flow to project acoustic energy through a water media. The transducer, by being freely flooded, in independent of changing pressures in the surrounding media and does not require elaborate sealing assemblies, making it ideal for operation at extreme depths. Varying the configuration of the shutter, interconnecting conduits, and varying the angular speed of the shutter afford selective broadband operation, and increasing the flow rate provides a greatly increased power output.

    摘要: An acoustic impulse generator for producing in a liquid body acoustic impulses useful, for example, in geophysical explorations. The generator includes a housing which defines an enclosed chamber having a flexible wall. Driving means in one operating condition cause the flexible wall to execute a forward stroke in the liquid body thereby storing potential energy in the liquid body. The driving means in another operating condition allow the flexible wall to execute a return stroke in a relatively short time interval thereby generating an acoustic impulse.
