Electrostatic latent images are developed in a liquid electrophoretic developer, and during the development, developer immediately adjacent the image whose toner concentration has become depleted is removed from the image area and replaced by fresh developer. Images are thereby more fully developed to the extent of the electrostatic charge, eliminating edge and halo effects that result from incomplete development and the preferential attraction of toner to areas of higher electrostatic charge over adjacent areas of lower charge.

Upper and lower guides are curved in the direction of the path of movement of the copy material to be developed and extend transversely of such path for a distance greater than the width of the copy material. Opposed walls are connected with the ends of these guides to define a confined arcuate space with an inlet slot and an outlet slot. A liquid developer distribution outlet opens into such arcuate space adjacent to and inwardly of the inlet slot for distributing a flow of developer fluid in a pattern extending transversely of said path for a distance substantially the same as the width of the copy material. The liquid developer is forced through said outlet under pressure resulting in a turbulent flow of the developer liquid throughout the arcuate space thereby causing a substantial quantity of fresh, active, charged toner particles to come into contact with the latent electrostatic image on the copy material.

AN ELECTROSTATOGRAPHIC IMAGING MEMBER BEARING AN ELECTROSTATIC LATENT IMAGE ON A RECORDING SURFACE IS BROUGHT INTO CONTACT WITH A TONER LAYER ON THE SURFACE OF A DONOR MEMBER IN A LIQUID DEVELOPER BATRH, SEPARATED SLIGHTLY FROM THE DONOR MEMBER AND THEREAFTER SUBJECTED TO AN ELECTRIC FIELD WHICH CAUSES TONER PARTICLES IN THE BACKGROUND AREAS OF THE RECORDING SURFACE AS WELL AS TONER PARTICLES SUSPENDED IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE RECORDING SURFACE AND THE DONOR MEMBER TO ELECTROPHORETICALLY MIGRATE TO THE DONOR MEMBER. THE DEVELOPED IMAGE ON THE RECORDING SURFACE PASSES THROUGH THE ZONE SUBJECTED TO THE ELECTRIC FIELD TO FURTHER CLEAN THE RECORDING SURFACE. Electrophotographic developing apparatus for applying a liquid developer to one surface of an electrophotographic recording element carrying the electrostatic image thereon so as to render the electrostatic image visible, the apparatus being adapted to apply liquid developer by a surface immersion technique and including edge control means arranged to contact portions of the recording element adjacent the side edges of the recording element as it moves past the reservoir containing the liquid developer, the edge control means preventing immersion of portions of the front surface of the recording element extending inwardly of the side edges for a predetermined distance whereby the back surface of the recording element is kept free from liquid developer.
