A firebox cover for thermally sealing off a firebox while not in use comprising a flexible barrier member, a sealing member and a magnet member. The flexible insulating barrier member covers a firebox opening within a room preventing thermal energy within the room from exiting through the firebox opening and preventing thermal energy within the firebox from entering the room. The barrier member has a cellular structure with a thermally reflective front face and thermally reflective back face. The sealing member about the periphery of the barrier member provides a substantially air tight seal about edges of the barrier member when the sealing member is magnetically affixed to a metallic surface surrounding the firebox opening during use of the cover. The sealing member has a pocket for receiving the periphery of the barrier member, an expansion portion for maintaining contact between the sealing member and the surface surrounding the firebox opening during pressure changes across the barrier member, and a cavity for receiving the magnet member. The magnet that fits within the cavity of the sealing member magnetically affix the sealing member to the metallic surface surrounding the firebox opening.

A screen, e.g. fire-guard is provided for heating a room by convection using the heat from a radiation heat source, e.g. an open hearth fire, a gas-fire or an electric radiant heater, and when the heat source is an open hearth fire for use as a fire-guard preventing sparks or other small particles of combustion from entering the room in which the fire is located. The screen includes a row of at least with their upper portions spaced apart vertical pipes having each at or near their lower end an inlet opening and at or near their upper end an outlet opening for air sucked from the room by the chimney-action of the warm pipes. The pipes of at least one pair of adjacent pipes of the screen are hingedly interconnected for the rotation of one of these pipes about the longitudinal axis of the other pipe thereof by coupling and clamping means.

A housing is mounted above the frame and a first flexible covering element is mounted for movement in the first pair of guide tracks. A device is provided for heating a room by convection using the heat from a conventional radiation heat source. The heating device further acts as a fireplace guard when the heat source is a fire to substantially prevent sparks or other small particles of combustion from entering the room in which the fireplace is located. The device includes a threshold unit and a plurality of spaced pipes. The pipes are supported by the threshold unit while a screen member such as metal gauze is connected between the pipes. An opening in the threshold unit is adjacent the floor surface of the room in which the heat source is located. The radiation from the heat source raises the temperature of the pipes while relatively cool air enters the opening in the threshold unit and passes into the pipes. The temperature of the air is increased by the heated pipes and exits from the top thereof to heat the room by convection. The threshold unit can comprise a number of separate units which are joined together by a hinge construction so that the length of the threshold unit can be varied and also to permit access to the radiant heat source.

A fireplace screen for substantially entirely covering a fireplace fuel burning chamber so as to preclude the continuous flow of air therein utilizes a rigid frame to which a first air impervious rigid sheet is fixedly secured and to which a second air impervious rigid sheet is slidably attached. Three accordian pleated members extend downwardly from the frame and provide a pair of openings through which a portion of the andirons commonly utilized with fireplaces extend to a position forward from the screen. The accordian-like members may be extended into a closed position in those installations wherein andirons are not employed. A plurality of permanent magnets are affixed to the rearmost surfaces of the frame, permitting the screen to be removably attached to fireplace structures having ferromagnetic members affixed adjacent to the open mouth portions thereof.
