    Abstract: An improved milking station is disclosed including an improved sensor for indicating premature teat cup disengagement, an improved shut-off valve mechanism, and a teat cup retraction assembly. In the outflow line of milk from the teat cup assembly, a plug with a magnet therein is gravitationally biased between the limit of travel bars. Assuming normal milk exhaustion from a cow's udder, the magnet falls to a lower position for a predetermined period of time (in the order of 4-6 seconds) and actuates the shut-off valve and retracts the teat cup assembly. When premature disengagement of the teat cup assembly occurs (as by the cow kicking the assembly loose), and the teat cup becomes disengaged, vacuum pulls the plug with the magnet in the outflow conduit to the full-up position. In the full-up position, retraction occurs with a blinking light indicating that disengagement has occurred without necessarily fully draining the cow's bag. Milk shut-off occurs between the teat cup assembly and vacuum manifold by a rubber hose flattened against a T-shaped anvil inserted within the hose. The anvil is positioned with the hose surrounding it between compression members. By squeezing the hose sides downwardly onto the anvil, complete sealing occurs without straining the hose size beyond the elastic limit. Teat cup retraction is actuated at the end of an air cylinder having a gathering point initially over the side of the cow. When retraction is called for, the teat cup assembly is retracted from the cow and lifted immediately upward and forward of the animal. Only after upward and forward motion has commenced, is the teat cup assembly pulled inward into the center of the milking station. Swatting of the animal with the teat cup assembly either in the milk stall or in the adjacent stall is avoided.

    Abstract: A milking unit detacher mechanism including a main support column and a vertically movable milker support column slidably mounted on the main support column. The milker support column has a horizontally extending retractable milking unit support assembly mounted thereon adapted to support a milker unit on the end thereof when the milker unit is attached to a cow for milking. The milker unit support assembly can be retracted from its extended position underneath the cow to a retracted position adjacent the cow. A flexible retract member is fastened at one end to the milking unit support assembly and at the other end to a retract means for exerting a pulling force on the flexible retract member to thereby cause the milker unit support assembly to be retracted. The retract means includes a power cylinder having a movable piston rod. When the power cylinder is energized in its retract direction, it operates to pull on the flexible retract member and to also engage the milker support column and move it upwardly in a vertical direction.

    Abstract: A milking installation for a milking stable having a line of milking stations for cows arranged side-by-side, comprising a number of teat cup clusters, each of which has teat cups manually interconnectible by hoses to milk and vacuum pipes. The clusters being mounted on a carriage which moves along the milking stations. The clusters are movable relative to the carriage on a guideway. During an inactive phase of the movement of the clusters relative to the carriage, the clusters are automatically disconnected from the cows and from the milk and vacuum pipes; while during an active phase of the same movement they may be manually connected to the cows and to the milk and vacuum pipes.

    Abstract: A milker unit for a carry-away milking system with a milk receiving chamber beneath the cow, having a height to accommodate low udders. The chamber has a lid to which the teat cups are connected, the chamber tapering inwardly toward the bottom to a base. The over-all height of the chamber is approximately 5 1/4 inches. Two forms of milker are shown. One, mounted on the stall structure, is carried in a cantilever arm having a downwardly extending portion connected with the lower part of the chamber through a rocker connector permitting limited movement about an axis parallel with the length of the cow being milked. In the other form, carried from a surcingle during milking, the milker includes a stand for supporting the apparatus on a surface when not in use. The stand has a movable leg which is adjustable between an extended support position with the teat cups above the surface and a retracted milking position in which the height of the milker is minimized.
