    摘要: The invention provides a spiral separator of the type for use in separating a pulp of water and minerals into mineral fractions of differing densities and having a helical trough (30) supported with its axis upright. The shape of the trough working surface profile (30) varies (FIGS. 2A-2D) from place to place along the trough. The profile has a point of maximum displacement (32A, 32B, 32C, 32D) at which profile (30) is at a maximum spacing below a notional straight line (40) joining the inner end (31) and outer end (22) of the trough working surface profile (30). The distance of the point of maximum displacement (32A, 32B, 32C, 32D) from one end (31 or 22) of the profile varies along the trough. A method for manufacture of troughs according to the invention is also described and claimed.

    摘要: This invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for scrubbing crude oil (bitumen) from tar-sands, the apparatus being characterized by a heated vessel for maintaining the tar-sand/water slurry at between approximately 180.degree.-200.degree. F., a pair of counterrotating screw conveyors in the bottom of the vessel for agitating the sand and moving it to the discharge end, means for simultaneously diluting and aerating the incoming slurry that produces small bubbles effective to float the crude oil freed from the sand to the surface, an overflow wier running alongside the vessel for catching the oil skimmed off the surface of the water, transversely-extending endless chain-and-flight skimmers for skimming the oil into the wier, a bottom-opening discharge for the clean sand, and valves controlling the discharge of sand effective to remove the latter without lowering the fluid level in the vessel to a point where the oil previously released can reattach itself to the sand. The method encompasses the steps of submerging the tar-sand in a hot water bath agitating the sand while thus immersed while continuously bubbling air up through the slurry to float the oil particles freed from the sand grains to the surface, continuously skimming off the oil floating on the water bath from the surface thereof, and withdrawing the clean sand from the bottom of the vessel intermittently and quickly enough to prevent the level of the water bath from falling below the top of the screws.

    摘要: A mechanical classifier for separating sludge into coarse grained and fine-grained portions, and having a trough with a bottom ascending at a slant above which a conveying mechanism is disposed for advancing the coarse-grained material upwardly along the trough bottom. A weir for overflow of the fine-grained material is located at the deep end of the trough, and a sludge inlet is provided above the level of the weir for introducing the sludge into the trough. Supplementary water is applied to the trough between the sludge inlet and the discharge end of the trough bottom through at least one conduit which extends transversely over the trough bottom and upwardly of the two sidewalls of the trough above the level of the sludge bath established by the weir. The conduit includes a protective shield facing the sludge inlet and ascending at a slant toward the trough axis. Supplementary water supplied to the conduit passes therefrom through openings below the bath level preferably formed as slits in the conduit wall facing toward the discharge end of the trough. To increase the separating capability of the classifier, additional conduits may be provided, preferably arranged in spaced transverse zones to permit sedimentation of the materials between the zones.
