    摘要: A system for locating a horizontal bore below a ground surface includes a transmitting source that radiates from the bore a dipole magnetic field aligned with the bore. A receiver includes a first and a second coil, the axis of each coil being orthogonal to the axis of the other. A measurement device in communication with the coils is configured to measure the phase of signals induced in the coils by the magnetic field when the axis of the first coil is horizontally perpendicular to the axis of the magnetic field and the axis of the second coil is vertically perpendicular to the axis of the magnetic field. The measurement device determines the lateral position of the transmitting source relative to the coils responsively to the phase of the signals induced on the two coils.

    摘要: A metal detector with a transmit coil which transmits a magnetic field, transmit timing control circuitry, and receive signal circuitry and receive signal processing circuitry, and a low voltage and a high voltage power supply. The timing sequence generated within the transmit timing control circuitry produces control signals such that there are at least two different transmit periods, a short and a long period, and such that there are periods when no current flows through the transmit coil. The timing sequence is such that an average transmit coil energy at termination of the long periods is similar to that of an average transmit coil energy at termination of the short periods.

    摘要: A magnetic receiver with a magnetically permeable core is positioned inside a wellbore casing and operated in a feedback mode to reduce attenuation of a measurable magnetic field. The receiver employs a feedback device to reduce mutual coupling between the core and the casing, which reduces the otherwise normal attenuation of em signals inside the casing. The feedback device may be provided in the form of an extra or feedback winding that effectively cancels the inducing field inside the core and reduces the attenuation otherwise caused by the core-casing interaction. Alternatively, the magnetic receiver may employ, as the feedback device, a current feedback amplifier circuit to cancel the inducing field inside the core. Specifically, the circuit is operated to produce a secondary magnetic field that essentially cancels the inducing field inside the core.

    摘要: Apparatus and methods for measuring cross sectional area and flaws in a continuous sucker rod string as the string is conveyed within a borehole. These measured parameters are useful is monitoring the physical integrity of the sucker rod string. A magnet is used to saturate an increment of continuous sucker rod, and a coil is used to measure induced flux. Cross sectional area of the rod increment is computed from the flux measurement. One or more Hall effect transducers are used to measure leakage from the increment as a function of distance along the increment. This measurement is used to detect and quantify the type of flaw within the rod increment being investigated. The process is repeated as the sucker rod string is conveyed into or out of the borehole.

    摘要: The inductive sensor arrangement for detecting metal objects hidden in a surrounding medium comprises a pair of field coils for generating an alternating magnetic flux by a sequential excitation with an AC-current and a pair of sense coils respectively mounted inside each associated field coil in an orientation to the axes of each of said field coils such that essentially no voltage is induced in said sensor coils in an environment free of a metallic object. If a metallic object comes into the vicinity of the inductive sensor four characteristic voltage value sets are produced by the sense coil pair which become subject of an algorithmic processing for defining a position and distinction criterion in respect to said hidden metallic object. The sensor arrangement has the advantage of a single point measurement resulting in an accurate position discrimination for a hidden metallic object like a rebar in concrete.

    摘要: A line locator having the capability of determining the horizontal position with respect to a line is described. The line locator includes a left sensor and a right sensor of any orientation. The left sensor and the right sensor are coupled to a convolution amplifier that amplifies the sum of the output signals from the left sensor and the right sensor. The detection circuitry includes automatic gain control amplification where the automatic gain control signal is obtained digitally from a digital controller. In addition, the detection circuitry includes phase detection circuitry where the phase reference signal is obtained from an external transmitter that is coupled to the line. In addition, the AGC signal and the phase reference signal may both be obtained by processing output signals from magnetic field detectors in the line locator.

    摘要: The present invention relates generally to the use of polyaryletherketone-based thermoplastic materials in high pressure, high temperature, production logging applications. A polyaryletherketone resin bonded with glass fibers is formed into a housing for formation evaluation sensors permanently located downhole. The housing is constructed by any of the following processes: filament winding, fiber placement, or compression molding or injection molding. When used in a production well, the housing encloses the formation evaluation sensors and protects the sensors from borehole fluids. Housing properties can be modified with changes in materials added to the resin in order for the housing to function as casing or coiled tubing. This would allow wireline or logging-while-drilling conveyed sensors passing through the casing or coiled tubing to sense the formation and borehole fluid properties.

    摘要: A resistivity tool for use in an LWD system includes an asymmetric transmitter design with multiple transmitters capable of generating EM signals at multiple frequencies. A pair of receivers are positioned at one end of the transmitter array to detect the EM signals after they have traversed the region in the vicinity of the borehole. A calibrating transmitter is positioned between the receivers, which can be used in two different modes of operation. In a first mode, the calibrating transmitter is used to calibrate the receivers for thermal drift. In this calibration mode, an attenuation correction and phase shift correction can be calculated to correct for thermal drift of the receivers while the resistivity tool is in the borehole. Thus, the thermal drift of the receivers can be re-calibrated as often as desired while the tool is in the well. In a second mode of operation, the calibrating receiver may be used to measure the resistivity of the drilling mud in the borehole.
