This invention relates to receive electronics of a metal detector for processing a received signal from a target in a soil, the receive electronics including: processing electronics for synchronous demodulating or sampling the received signal to produce at least two substantially ground balanced signals; processing electronics for processing the at least two substantially ground balanced signals to produce at least two substantially ground balanced processed signals, a first substantially ground balanced processed signal being more indicative of a spread of a time constant density spectrum of the received signal than a second substantially ground balanced processed signal, and the second substantially ground balanced processed signal being more indicative of an average time constant of the received signal than the first substantially ground balanced processed signal; and processing electronics for processing the at least two substantially ground balanced processed signals to produce an output signal indicative of at least the spread of the time constant density spectrum.

An electronic class-D amplifier with intrinsically low distortion employing modulation of the slopes of a triangular-wave carrier reference signal; the modulation being in proportion to the derivative of the input signal. The negation of the distortion is most successful if this derivative signal is shifted in phase and gain to compensate for the closed loop phase and gain of the amplifier. The amplifier includes a pulse width modulator which includes an oscillator (5) with at least one integrator and a first comparator (6), at least one servo-loop amplifier (3), an input signal processor (4) which processes and modifies the input amplifier signal. An output signal of the oscillator produces a carrier reference signal (13) which includes at least positive and negati derivative components, which are modulated by an output of the input signal processor (4) which is applied to a modulation input of the oscillator (5), whereby at least the symmetry of the carrier reference signal is modulated. An output (11) of the output switching stage is fed back via a negative feedback path (15) to an input of the servo-loop amplifier (3).

The present invention relates to a method for detecting an electrically conducting target in soil, including the steps of generating a repeating transmit signal cycle of a fundamental period using transmit electronics, the repeating transmit signal cycle including a first period and a second period within each fundamental period; generating a transmit magnetic field using a magnetic field transmitter, based on the repeating transmit signal cycle, for transmission into the soil; receiving a receive magnetic field using a magnetic field receiver; producing a receive signal induced by the receive magnetic field; arranging for a current flowing through the magnetic field transmitter to flow to a first potential through a damping resistor during the second period for providing a damping effect on the current flowing through the magnetic field transmitter; arranging for the current flowing through the magnetic field transmitter to flow to a second potential, predominantly through an alternative path with a lower resistance than the damping resistor during the first period; monitoring the current flowing through the magnetic field transmitter to provide a control signal, the control signal, in effect, causing the second period to begin when the current flowing through the magnetic field transmitter is substantially zero; and processing the receive signal during at least part of the repeating transmit signal cycle to produce an indicator signal indicating the presence of an electrically conducting target when the target is within the influence of the transmit magnetic field.
