A disc mounting system includes the attachment of each disc to a disc gang bar via a dedicated leaf spring. Each of the leaf springs, which can be generally U shaped, are attached at a top end to the gang bar and at a lower leg to a disc spindle such that the disc is positioned at least partially alongside the spring lower leg. The mounting system allows the disc to deflect vertically, laterally or torsionally when the disc encounters an obstacle. An optional shield can be attached to the leaf spring to prevent soil and debris thrown out by adjacent discs from entering the spring. A disc scraper blade can also be attached to the shield.

Each tilling apparatus comprising a rotary tilling implement in the form of a plow disc or soil inversion wheel with the tilling implement being mounted for rotation about a substantially horizontal shaft which itself is pivotable about its end remote from the tilling implement for reversing the inclination of the tilling implement relative to the direction of travel for changing the arrangement between right- and left-hand plowing. Preferably, the axis of the pivot connection from the beam to the tilling apparatus is inclined to the vertical in order to extend downwardly and forwardly away from the plow.

An improved disk harrow C-spring with a tapered cross section which reduces the compressive stresses in the inside radius and improves vertical and side-to-side flexibility. The curved portion of the C-spring has a constant cross section at the top and around three-fourths of the bend. At a location on the bend 45 degrees down from the horizontal, the thickness tapers to a location forward of the bearing hanger. The cross section is constant from the end of the taper to the end of the spring. The tapered cross section allows a thicker section to be used on the most highly stressed areas in the upper quadrant of the curved portion of the C-spring. The lower quadrant taper results in uniform stress distribution along the entire C-spring with the maximum compressive stress on the inside radius reduced substantially over a conventional C-spring. In addition, the tapered design provides an increase in both vertical and side-to-side flexibility for improved operation in rocky soil.

The apparatus includes a pull-type frame carried by support wheels. The frame is vertically adjustable relative to the support wheels. A first gang of discs is mounted in a forward position on the frame. The discs are widely spaced relative to each other to leave alternate strips of tilled and untilled soil. The strips of untilled soil are of substantial width, approximately equal to the width of the tilled strips. The support wheels are preferably located behind the first gang of discs in the strips of untilled soil. A second gang of discs is mounted on the frame behind the first gang. Disc blades on the second gang are located to work in the untilled strips left by the first gang; and these discs are oriented to displace soil in a lateral direction opposite to that in which the first gang displaces soil. Under high speed operation, the soil dug by each disc is thrown over the adjacent strip to fill the row formed by the adjacent disc in the forward direction. Thus, the ground is worked only once in a single pass of this system, and most of the trash remains buried; yet, primary tillage can be achieved with a minimum of ridges and furrows remaining in the soil.
