Abstract: A method and an arrangement for transferring information including delay sensitive data, such as speech and video data, in a packet radio service is provided. Data blocks are transmitted from a mobile station to a radio resource entity during a first active data transfer period using an uplink temporary block flow (TBF) connection. The uplink TBF connection is maintained during a passive period that follows the first active data transfer period, wherein during the passive period the mobile station does not send data blocks to the radio resource entity.

Abstract: A method and a communication system which includes a first network element, e.g. portable terminal, connectable to a second network element. One of selectable modes is used for communication. A network element is adapted to perform a mode selection procedure for selecting the same mode for bidirectional communication between the network elements. The mode selection ensures the use of one and the same mode in uplink and downlink direction and thus enables e.g. IP telephony in UMTS using SIP protocol. The invention provides for facilitating a VoIP communication session by way of a radio link with a mobile station. The mobile station forms a QoS (Quality of Service) information element for communication to a radio access network portion. The QoS information element is indicating whether to remove packet header information of the data packets to be communicated upon the radio link pursuant to the communication session.

Abstract: The invention provides a method of handing over user equipment from a source cell to a target cell in a cellular communications network. The cellular communications system comprises a plurality of control units. The method comprises the steps of receiving a message indicating if the operation of the radio link control protocol is to be continued or reset when changing cell, resetting the operation of the radio link control protocol if the message indicates that the current radio link control protocol is to be reset, or continuing the operation of said radio link control protocol if the message indicates that the radio link control protocol is to be continued.

Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. The invention further concerns the technology of transferring control information relating to packet data transfer resources on individual packet-switched radio connections at the interface between a transmitting device and a receiving device. It s an objective of this invention to provide a method and a system that offers solutions to the prior art problems. Especially, it is an object of this invention to provide a solution for signalling, which enables the use of more than one connection (TBF) and time slot for packet data transfer in one data transfer direction, and the use of asymmetric resources for uplink/downlink data transfer. The objectives of the invention are fulfilled by providing a procedure, in which the one and same uplink control channel is used for transferring uplink control information, which relates to at least two downlink TBFs. This is preferably achieved by including in the uplink control message information on which downlink time slot the concerned TBF is transferred, assuming the uplink control channel uses an uplink timeslot of which the peer downlink timeslot (i.e. with same timeslot number) is not used by the concerned TBF. It is also preferably achieved by including in a downlink control message information on which uplink time slot control information is transferred corresponding to a determined TBF.

Abstract: A modified unacknowledge mode of a telecommunications system interface is defined by providing for a special signaling indication by way of a selected packet, signaling sequence, message, or the like, from a transmitting side to a receiving side that a given message, packet, cell, signaling sequence, or the like is to be treated specially, despite the unacknowledge mode being used, by acknowledging receipt thereof at the receiving side back to the transmitting side. In this way, certain important messages can be acknowledged, while less important messages can be sent without acknowledgement. This reduces the need for wasteful use of capacity for applications in which some of the messages are more important than others to be received correctly.

Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. Especially the invention applies to transferring delay sensitive data, such as speech and video data, in a mobile telecommunications system. It is an object of this invention to provide a solution, in which the physical connection of a packet radio service is kept reserved also during the passive periods of a session but the same physical resource can still be shared between multiple users. A basic idea of the invention is that the network is informed at the end of an active period, on whether a passive period follows the active period or if the connection can be released. When an active period starts after a passive period, the connection preferably reserves the packet data channel again, and possible other users of the channel are assigned to other channels.

Abstract: Radio frequencies of a base station in a cellular network are chosen adaptively so that when choosing the uplink frequency the base station measure at all frequencies or at some frequencies of the reception band used in the system what is the total power of the signal received at the frequency in question. The frequency at which the lowest power is received is chosen as uplink frequency. When choosing the downlink frequency, a tuning signal is transmitted at all frequencies or at some frequencies of the transmission band. Mobiles located in areas of other cells and operating at the same frequency experience the effect of the tuning signal as an interference. The base station is tuned to use that downlink frequency at which the interference caused by itself to other traffic is sufficiently low.
