摘要:
A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for managing a serially presented set of items. The process displays a content for a given item for an amount of time based on user input in response to a user selection of the given item. The process identifies a dwell value for the given item based on a dwell time for the given item and a timing profile. The dwell time is the amount of time the content for the given item is displayed. The process removes the item from a plurality of content items in response to a determination that the dwell value for the item is less than a dwell threshold.

A system and method for providing indicators of component interaction capability across navigation elements is presented. A user selects an emitter portlet that is located on a viewable page. In turn, a property broker identifies compatible handler portlets located on different pages, and displays handler icons on navigation elements whose corresponding pages include compatible handler portlets. The user selects one of the handler icons and, as a result, the property manager links the emitter portlet to the handler portlet that corresponds to the handler icon, and displays the linked handler portlet's page. The property broker also performs similar functions to link a handler portlet to an emitter portlet.

A method, system, and computer-readable code for a technique with which documents encoded according to the Extensible Markup Language (XML) notation or a derivative thereof can be more efficiently processed by selectively streaming document fragments. This selective streaming technique comprises identifying the static and the changeable portions or fragments of a document. The static fragments are written to a serialized binary format (i.e. a serialized binary stream), such as a disk file, thereby avoiding the re-parsing of this information when reconstituting a Document Object Model (DOM) tree for the document. Volatile fragments, on the other hand, remain in the XML or derivative notation when written to an output file.

Systems, methods and computer program products are provided for building and displaying dynamic graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that can be updated automatically without requiring code-level modification and recompiling. In response to a request to display a particular GUI on a computer display, an Extensible Markup Language (XML) data group is selected from a plurality of XML data groups and an XML display layout is selected from a plurality of XML display layouts. The selected XML data group includes one or more aggregations of data hierarchically ordered within the selected XML data group. XML data items are hierarchically ordered within each of the aggregations of data. The selected XML display layout contains one or more areas that define respective GUI display spaces within which XML data items from the respective aggregations of data can be displayed. XML markup tags associated with each aggregation of data within the selected XML data group are matched with XML markup tags associated with a respective area contained within the selected XML display layout. The XML data items contained within each aggregation of data are rendered in hierarchical order within a respective GUI display space defined by a respective area within the XML display layout.

A technique for alerting users to the existence of an interactive station within a virtual world accessible via the World Wide Web and determining whether the user is authorized to access the interactive station. An indicator is provided within the virtual world which shows to users the location and existence of an interactive station of the virtual world. The user selects the interactive station indicator in order to attempt to gain access to the interactive station. The virtual world may then verify whether the user is authorized to access the interactive station. Further, if the user is authorized to access the interactive station, the virtual world may maintain access to user data during the user's visit to the interactive station and modify the users data in accordance with the users activities therein. Also, the virtual world may use data provided by the user to perform functions in accordance with the users activities during the user's access to the interactive station.

Methods, systems and program products are provided which provide dynamic status to a user during the busy cycle of a processing system. The status information may be provided by displaying information to a user of a computer system during performance of an application program on the computer system by formatting the busy cursor to provide dynamic information which is unrelated to the application program in the computer system to the user during the display of the busy cursor. The dynamic information to be displayed to the user may be obtained from a source other than the application program on the computer system. The obtained dynamic information would then be used to format the busy cursor to provide the dynamic information to the user. Multiple information sources may also be utilized and the information display prioritized by a user.

Methods, data processing systems and program products for providing user interfaces with context sensitive borders to user selectable options. The context sensitive borders are created by providing a border to a user selectable option comprised of a plurality of picture elements wherein color characteristics from picture elements neighboring the border are varied to define the color characteristics of the picture elements of the border. The borders provided may provide a three dimensional appearance to the user selectable option and the user selectable option may be represented on the screen by an icon. The border may have a different perimeter than the icon corresponding to the user selectable option. The neighboring picture elements from which the border is derived may be adjacent to the border or may be the underlying elements of the border. The color characteristics may be varied by varying brightness and/or saturation.

A method and system for controlling the expression of emotion on a graphical representation of a face on a computer system. The system allows the user to indicate the intensity of the emotion to be displayed using a two dimensional plane. Each point on the plane representing a different variation of the direction and intensity of the Control and Affiliation emotions. When the user chooses the point on the plane to represent the emotion, the eyes, eyebrows and mouth of the graphical face are manipulated to represent the indicated emotion.
