In particular, the golf balls of the present invention comprise a cover, a core and optionally one or more intermediate layers disposed between the cover and the core, wherein the outer surface of the core, an intermediate layer(s) or both the core and the intermediate layers has a finely textured surface profile integrally molded in the outer surface thereof. The finely textured surface profile comprises a plurality of peaks having a maximum depth of about 2 mils to about 15 mils.

The mold is comprised of hemispherical upper and lower mold halves being removably mated along the non-planar parting line that is distinct from the position corresponding to an equator line of the spherical cavity. Each mold half having an interior cavity detail for creating a pattern of dimples on the cover of the golf ball, wherein at least one dimple lies across an equator of the ball and the parting line passes around and between interdigitated dimples without intersecting them, therein creating a “seamless” golf ball. The non-planar surface of the upper mold half comprising at least three true sprues for venting of air and excess material; and at least three false sprues for the placement of tabs on the cover for use in aligning the golf ball as it is spun in a buffing machine.

An improved mold frame for making a fast thermal response mold is disclosed. The mold frame has a plurality of rows with each row having a plurality of cavities. The mold frame is constructed of two half-molds, each half-mold containing an upper and lower plate vacuum brazed together to form flow channels that allow thermal mediums to pass in close proximity to the cavity. Without any direct contact between the flow mediums and the cavities the necessity for O-rings is eliminated. Without O-rings the compression molding of thermoplastic materials may be at temperatures greater than 300° F.

The rigid inner core maintains the balls' high coefficient of restitution at high impact speeds, while the soft intermediate layer provides better feel for greenside play. The intermediate layer can be made from a highly neutralized polymer, which can be thermoset or thermoplastic. The highly neutralized polymer is foamed or otherwise has its specific gravity reduced. The intermediate layer can also be made from a castable reactive liquid polymer.
