The present invention includes the steps of comparing sectors in an active set to set values corresponding to the soft or softer handoff for the sectors, respectively in a base station, transmitting a first parameter for selecting cell switching parameters between the sectors neighboring each other in the active set to a mobile station wherein the set values for the respective sectors are included in the first parameter, generating values of a parameter PDCH_GROUP_IDENTIFIER corresponding to a packet data channel group identifier using the set values included in the first parameter, determining whether a serving sector and a target sector among the sectors are in the soft or softer handoff using the generated values of the parameter PDCH_GROUP_IDENTIFIER, and selecting the cell switching parameters accordingly.

An overhead message and a method of performing channel hashing using the same are provided. The overhead message includes first and second fields of an extended CDMA channel list message (ECCLM). The first field contains information indicating whether the ECCLM includes at least one frequency assignment of list of frequency assignments that allows packet data support for a forward packet data channel or a 1×EV-DV system and the second field indicates whether each frequency assignment allows such support, thereby enabling channel hashing to be performed by a packet-data-supportable mobile station of a communication system.

A transmitter using constituent encoders to generate turbo-encoded bit sequence having variable bit order from an information bit is provided. Each constituent encoder encodes a bit to a bit sequence and each bit sequence from respective constituent encoder has same error correction performance in decoding. Each encoded bit sequence is punctured using optimal puncturing pattern based on code rate and the resultant sequences have the same error correction performance. A receiver receives each bit sequence and depunctures with an optimal depuncturing pattern to decode bits efficiently.

A method of transmitting packet data to a receiver in a communication system using a Hybrid ARQ technique is disclosed. In accordance with one illustrative embodiment of the present invention, an index representative of how much the first packet being transmitted such as a signal-to-noise (Eb/No) ratio is compared to a predetermined threshold value when an error is occurred during the step of decoding the packet. If the index is greater than or equal to the threshold value, the first packet transmitted is stored in a buffer and a receiver requests to transmit a second additional packet encoded with a lower code rate. On the other hand, if the index is less than the threshold value, the receiver requests to re-transmit the first packet encoded with the same code rate.

More specifically, the method includes transmitting to at least one base station (BS) a service message which includes information of at least one service type supported by the first MS and the second MS. Here the at least one service type relates to a multimedia service supported by each of the first MS and the second MS. Furthermore, the method includes transmitting a request message which includes information of at least one service type selected by the first MS, receiving a response message which includes information of the selected service type which is supported by both the first MS and a second MS, and transmitting a connection complete message between the first MS and the second MS for communication using the selected service type.
