A mold carrier (61) contains a fluid distribution system, such as a hot runner system (60), having a nozzle (76) with a substantially flat face (80, 82). The hot runner system includes melt channels (66-70) that require alignment with a complementary melt channel (96) within an interface adaptor, such as a sprue bushing (92), that permits coupling of the hot runner system to a mold (62, 64). The sprue bushing (92) also has a flat sealing surface that is arranged to abut, in use, against the substantially flat face (80, 82) of the nozzle (76) to provide an interface. Under appropriate positive biasing (88), the flat faces of the nozzle (76) and sprue bushing (92) produce a substantially flat interface that maintains sealing contact in the face of potential radial misalignment between the various melt channels. The interface is recessed within a boundary defined by a mold locating ring (100), thereby protecting the nozzle from damage during loading of a mold into the mold carrier (61). The nozzle's face may include a step that causes a recessing of a body portion of the nozzle relative to the actual interface produced to the sprue bushing.

The technical field of the invention broadly relates to molding systems, and more particularly to a flexible shoe assembly for use in a molding system. The clamp unit of a molding system includes a moving platen and a stationary platen supported by a frame. Tie bars interconnect the moving platen with the stationary platen. The tie bars are secured to the stationary platen and pass through respective openings in the moving platen. Each tie bar is supported and guided within their respective openings by a flexible shoe assembly and wear pad. The flexible shoe assembly has a force redirector for directing force away from a peripheral edge of the wear pad towards a central force area. The flexible shoe assembly also includes a load distributor to distribute the load across the wear pad surface. The flexible shoe assembly includes an upper support that is flexible about a lower support to keep the wear pad in operational contact with the tie bar.

A mechanism for applying a clamping force to a columnar member, such as a tiebar, is described. The clamping mechanism includes a compressible member surrounding the columnar member for gripping the columnar member and transmitting a clamping force thereto, which compressible member is slidable along the columnar member. The mechanism further includes a clamping piston for applying a clamping force, which clamping piston has a bore with an engaging surface for receiving and frictionally engaging the compressible member. The frictional engagement between the compressible member and the engaging surface prevents any relative sliding movement between the compressible member and the clamping piston. The mechanism still further includes a sliding piston for applying a clamping force and for causing the compressible member to slide along the columnar member from an initial position to a preload position where the compressible member is compressed by contact with the engaging surface as the compressible member moves between the positions. Compression of the compressible member causes it to grip the columnar member and apply an initial clamping force. The main clamping force is applied to the compressible member and hence to the tiebar by moving the clamping piston to a clamping position. A method for applying a clamping force to a mold using the clamp mechanism of the present invention is also described.

The at least one stationary and movable platens includes a first wall having edges and a central area and at least first and second sides, wherein the first side is adapted to be positioned nearest the clamping operation. The platen further includes a second wall spaced from and substantially parallel to the first wall, wherein the first and second walls extend substantially transverse to the first direction of the force. An intermediate support structure is positioned between the walls and is used to direct the force from the edges of the first wall toward the central area of the first wall for substantially preventing non-uniform deflection of the first wall along the first side. A related process for preventing flash formation is also disclosed.

The present invention relates to an improved clamping mechanism for use in injection molding machines and similar pieces of equipment where it is desired to apply a clamping force to particular components. The clamping mechanism of the present invention employs at least one spaced apart brake plate mounted to one component and a braking unit for engaging the brake plates. The braking unit has at least one pair of brake pad linings surrounding the brake plates and at least one piston-cylinder unit for causing frictional engagement between the respective brake pad linings and the brake plate(s). When the brake pad linings grip the brake plate(s), the braking unit becomes locked to the components to which the brake plate(s) are attached. The clamping mechanism of the present invention may be employed on simple injection molding machines as well as TANDEM.RTM. injection molding machines.
