摘要: A method includes transmitting a paging request message to a plurality of asynchronous base stations (102a-g) where a paging message is sent within its respective cell at any time within a given paging interval (202). The method continues by receiving notification that paged mobile station (106) has responded to a paging message. The page cancelling message indicates to the base stations do not need to send the paging message within their respective cells during the current paging interval and that the paging process is cancelled.

摘要: Various embodiments are described for potentially reducing the impact of routing area updates on wireless system capacity. Logic flow diagram 10, in FIG. 1, depicts such functionality. In some embodiments, it is determined (12) whether a remote unit is within an edge portion of a routing area, while in other embodiments it is determined (12) whether the remote unit is within an end portion of a routing area update interval. It is also determined (14) whether one or more conditions are present for the remote unit to perform a resource-efficient routing update. A routing area update is then performed (16) when one or more of the conditions are present and when, depending on the embodiment, either the remote unit is determined to be within the edge portion of the routing area or the remote unit is determined to be within the end portion of the routing area update interval.

摘要: For a packet, a communication device determines (12) a length of a packet length field based on one or more of the following: a size of a transmit region allocated for a remote unit, a size of a transmit region allocated for a remote unit and not to be used for at least one other packet, and/or whether the packet length of the packet is indicated by a history of packet lengths of previously transmitted packets. The communication device may also or alternatively determine (22) a length of a connection identifier field based on a number of connection identifiers previously established. The communication device then transmits (13, 23) the packet, which includes the field(s) of determined length. By determining the lengths of these fields in this manner, the fields may be made shorter and their use may potentially reduce signaling overhead as compared to using the present-day fixed-length fields.

摘要: A method is provided for allocating initial ranging opportunities in a series of frames. According to the method, a number of initial ranging opportunities are allocated in frame N that occurs after a triggering event, and k frames after frame N the number of initial ranging opportunities is selectively reduced. The triggering event is one of system startup and broadcast of an Uplink Channel Descriptor message. Also provided is a base station that includes a controller for allocating a number of initial ranging opportunities in frame N that occurs after a triggering event. The controller selectively reduces the number of initial ranging opportunities k frames after frame N. The triggering event is one of system startup, broadcast of an Uplink Channel Descriptor message, broadcast of a page message, or broadcast of a signature for an overhead configuration message.

摘要: Various embodiments are described herein to address the need for reducing call setup delays with respect to supplemental channels. Modifications to channel assignment messaging (104), such as an enhanced ECAM, and service connection messaging (108), such as an enhanced SCM, are described. These modifications enable the assignment of SCHs (110) earlier in the call setup sequence. In addition, embodiments for determining and anticipating when such modified messaging may effectively speed the transfer of data (including VoIP) between a BS (201) and an MS (210) are described.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method and a system for dynamically reducing a number of RF technologies being used for processing at least one broadcast service for a plurality of mobile stations in a wireless communication network. The method comprises determining an RF technology being used by each mobile station. At least one of a plurality of predefined parameters is evaluated if at least two mobile stations of the plurality of mobile stations are using different RF technologies. Further, at least one mobile station of the plurality of mobile stations is switched to a preferred RF technology in response to evaluating the at least one of a plurality of predefined parameters.

摘要: Various embodiments are described which may serve to improve spreading channel code selection in wireless technologies that employ two-stage ranging. For example, some of the embodiments enable a number of spreading codes to be reused at each network node (111, 112), potentially increasing the number of codes available to each remote unit and thereby reducing the collision rate. Rather than simply selecting a spreading channel code randomly, remote units (101-103), in some embodiments, select a spreading channel code based on one or more considerations such as pilot signal strength, remote unit location, a remote unit mobility level, and a priority class associated with the remote unit. Depending on the embodiment, network nodes can partition the spreading codes into groups and then assign link bandwidth to remote units based on the group associated with the code selected by that remote unit.

摘要: Portions of transmitted messages, such as a portion of a service option field, can include a coded representation. The coded representation can correlate to previously stored information as retained at a receiving unit. Upon receiving the coded representation, the receiving unit can use it to access a specific item of previously stored information and then use that information. For example, a previously stored text message can be displayed and/or special annunciation tones can be used to signify specific events, such as the initiation of an interconnect or dispatch call type prior to actual complete initiation of such a call. In one embodiment, a relative station of transmission as corresponds to the coded representation can also be used to further aid in correlating the coded representation to a specific item of information.

摘要: The need to reduce the cost associated with signaling mobiles (120) across multiple cells (101–108) is addressed by embodiments of the present invention. A targeted MS is initially paged only in those cells in which the paging channel loading level is below a particular paging threshold. Similarly for short messaging, the RAN transmits the short messaging to the MS only in those cells in which the paging channel loading level is below a short messaging threshold. Therefore, the MS can be signaled in under-loaded cells first, were the effect on system capacity and performance is negligible. When successful, the MS signaling is achieved at a lower cost to the system than when loaded cells are involved.
