The scalable storage device includes a layer stack including at least one memory layer and at least one optical control layer positioned adjacent to the memory layer. The memory layer includes a plurality of memory cells and the optical control layer is adapted to receive optically-encoded read/write signals and to effect read and write operations to the plurality of memory cells through an electrical interface.

Abstract: An active metasurface includes a number of periodically-repeated unit cells arranged on a substrate that each include a plasmonic waveguide shaped and sized to provide a cutoff mode that captures light of a target wavelength. The active metasurface includes an index modulation controller that controllably varies a voltage differential across each one of the periodically-repeated cells to change a phase of light incident on the metasurface.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for transferring data in a data storage system, such as but not limited to a hard disc drive (HDD). An optical link is provided between an analog front end (AFE) of a data storage device controller circuit (SOC) and a preamplifier/driver circuit (preamp) mounted to a rotary actuator to transfer an analog domain signal. A selected component is extracted from the signal using a modulation element such as a micro-resonance ring (MRR) or a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Modulation (MZM) device. The extracted component is forwarded to a processing circuit to facilitate a transfer of data between a local memory and a non-volatile memory (NVM). The optical link includes a flexible portion in a flex circuit affixed to the rotary actuator and which supports the preamp. Multiplexed read, write, and power control signals are concurrently transmitted via the optical link. The link can concurrently service multiple head-disc assemblies (HDAs).

Abstract: Method and apparatus for light detection and ranging (LiDAR). In some embodiments, an emitter is used to emit a set of pulses to impinge a target, and a detector is used to detect a corresponding set of reflected pulses. Range information associated with the target is extracted using the reflected pulses. To compensate for doppler shift and enable more emitted pulses to be in-flight between the system and the target, a maximum expected doppler shift is determined, and the emitted pulses are provided with differential frequency intervals that are greater than the determined maximum expected doppler shift, such as a multiple (e.g., 2×) of the maximum expected doppler shift. In some cases, each in-flight pulse will have a unique frequency separated from all other pulse frequencies by at least the maximum expected doppler shift. Adaptive adjustments can be made such as increasing the differential frequency intervals for long distance targets.

The mirror is arranged to reflect the backscattered light from the reflecting apparatus towards the detector.

A focusing apparatus is arranged to focus the backscattered light from the disk towards the detector.
