In a driving circuit of a plasma display, a drain of a first transistor is coupled to a scan electrode and a switch driver is coupled between a gate and a source of the first transistor. The switch driver turns on the first transistor to reduce voltage of the scan electrode and charge a capacitor coupled to the source of the first transistor. When voltage across the capacitor is increased by a predetermined voltage, the first transistor is turned off and the scan electrode is floated. By repeating this operation, voltage of the scan electrode is gradually reduced. When a discharge is generated in a discharge cell of the plasma display by decreasing voltage of the scan electrode, voltage of the floated scan electrode is increased. The switch driver further discharges the capacitor when voltage variance of the floated scan electrode increases.

A power recovery circuit for a plasma display device and a driving method for the circuit. An inductor is coupled to form a resonance circuit and to generate a voltage difference between two electrodes of the same type that are coupled to the two terminals of a power recovery circuit. The resulting circuit allows formation of resonance between the two electrodes and power recovery from the panel capacitors formed in a PDP. Instead of hard-switching, the power recovery circuit is also used to maintain the voltage difference at the pre power recovery level after recovering power. As a result, power consumption is reduced when changing the voltage level of the two electrodes from the same voltage level to different voltage levels and vice versa. Further, elements having the same function are combined into a single element to simplify the circuit.

The present invention is to provide a method and apparatus for driving an AC PDP, where background luminance is reduced and the time required for a reset period is shortened while the stability and an address margin are sufficiently maintained, thus improving reset performance. The present invention provides a method of driving an Alternating Current (AC) Plasma Display Panel (PDP) comprising the steps of: applying a drive signal including a plurality of successive short pulses during the reset period; addressing at least a part of the discharge cells by applying data pulses to at least a part of said electrodes to enable selective discharge of said discharge cells according to image data during the address period; wherein, during the reset period, the plurality of short pulses form a plurality of discharges each duration of which is limited; and wherein a standardized wall charge is formed in each of the discharge cells due to the plurality of discharges so that the selective discharge is easily generated by application of data pulses during the address period.
