A user equipment device has a control information decoder configured to receive and decode an uplink scheduling grant. A transmit module is configured to receive a rank indicator (RI) extracted by the decoder and adapt a transmission rank in response to the RI. At least two transmit antennas are configured to transmit according to the RI.

This invention is a method of wireless communication having a communications protocol providing more downlink subframes than uplink subframes. The user equipment transmits a combination of a plurality of ACK/NAK response signals and related data. The related data could be the number of bits N of the plurality of ACK/NAK response signals or the number of detected downlink communications grants S requiring ACK/NAK response signals. This related data could be a cyclical redundancy check set of bits which may be scrambled upon the numbers N or S. Similar selections are feasible with resource elements or an index of a modulation symbol or codeword.

A transmission of information from a secondary to a primary node occurs in a plurality of N logical time durations on an uplink channel in a wireless network. A scheme for mapping between logical uplink control channel (PUCCH) resource blocks (RBs) and physical RBs (PRBs) used by PUCCH is described. A logical uplink control resource block index nLRB is derived by the secondary node in response to information from the primary node. The secondary node then maps the logical uplink control resource block index nLRB to a first uplink physical resource block index nPRB,1 of a plurality of uplink physical resource blocks, wherein nPRB,1=nLRB/2 if nLRB is even and nPRB,1=NPRB−ceil(nLRB/2) if nLRB is odd; wherein NPRB is the total number of the plurality of uplink physical resource blocks; and wherein ceil denotes the ceiling operation. The secondary node then transmits an uplink control information in a subframe using one of the plurality of uplink physical resource blocks indexed by nPRB,1.

A transmission of information within a wireless cellular network may include a first and second type of information. A subframe is produced that includes a plurality of symbols, wherein at least one symbol is designated as a data symbol and at least one symbol is designated as a reference signal symbol that contains a pre-defined reference signal. The first type of information is embedded in the data symbols. If the second type of data is expected, then the second type of information is embedded in at least one reference symbol by quadrature amplitude modulating the pre-defined reference signal. The subframe is then transmitted from one node in the network to a second node. In some embodiments, if it is determined that the second node is not expecting the second type of information, then a discontinuous transmission (DTX) response is embedded in the reference symbol instead of the second type of information.

User scheduling methods and apparatus for high-speed uplink packet access systems are disclosed. A disclosed example method comprises estimating a noise contribution due to other-cell interference for at least one previous transmit time interval, and selecting an uplink modulation and coding scheme for a wireless device for a current transmit time interval based on the estimated noise contribution.

A method for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) ranging is provided. The method includes receiving a signal having OFDMA symbols. An FFT is performed on this signal. Matching ranging codes are found. The power for a given hypothesized ranging code is determined and compared to a power threshold to determine if the code was transmitted. The timing offset and power are reported as the result of ranging.

A cell within cellular network includes user equipments (UEs) that transmit data to a base station (eNB). Over a period of time, not all of the UEs will have data to transmit. The UEs are tracked as a scheduled portion and an unscheduled portion, wherein a UE is included in the scheduled portion in response to receiving a scheduling request from the UE. Synchronization is maintained between the eNB and each UE in the scheduled portion by sending a timing adjustment (TA) command if needed. Synchronization is maintained between the eNB and each UE in the unscheduled portion by allocating a periodic reference signal (sync-RS) to each UE in the unscheduled portion and by sending a respective timing adjustment (TA) command if needed to each respective UE in the unscheduled portion in response to a respective sync-RS received from each UE in the unscheduled portion.

This invention extends the coverage and improves the capacity of wireless communication networks using relay nodes. The relay nodes are wirelessly connected to the base station. The base station uses the same radio access technology for a link between the base station and user equipment and between the base station and the relay node. The relay node uses the same radio access technology for a link between the base station and the relay node and between the relay node and the user equipment. The relay node supports at least a Physical Layer (PHY), a Medium Access Control (MAC) sub-layer and a Radio Link Control (RLC) sub-layer protocol.
