    Abstract: If the next charge to be stuffed into the baling chamber has not yet reached the desired size and density by the time the stuffing fork and compacting plunger are ready to begin their next operating cycles, the plunger and the fork are temporarily deactivated until the charge reaches full size and density. Thereupon, the fork stuffs the entire charge into the baling chamber in a single cycle of operation for compaction by the plunger. The baler is loaded from the bottom of the baling chamber through an upwardly curved duct that serves both as an accumulating chamber and as a pre-compression area into which the charge is progressively packed by a rotating, retractable finger drum at the lower end of the duct.     Abstract: A pull-type harvesting machine in the form of a baler has a vertically adjustable windrow pickup mechanism and a generally fore-and-aft laterally swingable tongue that connects the baler to a towing tractor, lateral adjustment of the tongue causing the baler to shift between a transport position behind the tractor and an operating position wherein the pickup mechanism is disposed outwardly of the tractor. The positions of the tongue and the header are respectively controlled by a pair of two-way hydraulic cylinders, and the flow of pressurized fluid between the cylinders and the tractor hydraulic system is controlled by a single control valve on the tractor, the cylinders being connected in parallel. A pair of solenoid-actuated valves are disposed in the hydraulic lines on the opposite sides of the cylinder that controls the tongue, the solenoid valves being powered by the tractor electrical system and controlled by a switch on the tractor so that the operator can selectively lock out the tongue control cylinder, whereby the pickup mechanism and the tongue can simultaneously be adjusted from their transport to their operating condition or the pickup mechanism can be vertically adjusted independent of the tongue.

    Abstract: In abstract, a preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a header for a peanut combine that is particularly adapted to harvest peanuts and the associated crop material above ground, or to salvage loose peanuts left on the ground after the above ground harvesting operation. In particular, the peanut header of the present invention comprises a main frame, a separator-conveyor associated with the header and operatively connected to the combine for conveying peanuts and crop material thereto, and a rotary harvesting mechanism disposed forwardly of the separator-conveyor for engaging and guiding the peanuts and associated crop material onto the separator-conveyor. To modify the header of the present invention to salvage loose peanuts from the ground, the rotary harvesting mechanism may be modified to include a plurality of ground engaging sweeping elements that are operative to engage the loose peanuts disposed on the ground and sweep them into the header, thereby salvaging the peanuts lost during the above ground harvesting operation. Alternatively, the header may be provided with a relatively narrow, transverse blade gauged to penetrate and lift a thin layer of soil and the loose peanuts lying thereon onto the separator-conveyor.
