    Abstract: There is provided a filter element which maintains the flow rate of a fluid passing through a filter medium, restrains a pressure loss as far as possible, and is compact in size. In the filter element including a filter medium 30 pleated so that peaks 30a and valleys 30b are arranged alternately and a frame 21 for holding the filter medium 30, the frame 21 includes a frame body 22 forming the peripheral edge portion thereof and a plurality of ribs 23 extending in parallel on the inside of the frame body 22.     Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel filter element having a septum with a staged pleating that repeats a pleating sequence having a major (longest) pleat, a minor (shortest) pleat and at least one intermediate pleat therebetween. The intermediate pleat(s) have pleat heights that are evenly distributed within the range of pleat heights bounded by the pleat height of the minor pleat and the pleat height of the major pleat. In two particular embodiments of the invention, the pleat height ratios of the major, intermediate and minor pleats are 3:2:1 and 4:3:2:1. In an filter element, the pleated septum may be held between an inner core and an outer guard. The tip of the major pleat in each pleating sequence may be in contact with the inner core of the filter element. The septum may also include drainage layers on upstream and downstream of the filter material layer.

    Abstract: A filter cartridge having pleated filter material, the ends of which are joined together to form a conical tube. At least one band is bonded to the pleated filter material and extends at least partially around the circumference of the material in the area of each of its end sides. The band may be bonded to crease points of the filter material. A method of manufacturing the filter cartridge includes providing the initially strip-shaped, planar filter material with pleats. The pleated strip-shaped filter material is laid out forming an unwound cone-shaped shell. A band is placed onto the crease points of one side and is bonded to the crease points. Subsequently, the filter material is bent to form a conical tube, and the tube is closed upon itself by joining the two ends together.

The end sections of each of the pleats are folded over and crushed together, and are embedded in a plastic plug to form a rigid link extending substantially transversely with respect to the array to thereby strengthen the array against inward radial collapse in response to liquid pressure acting on the array. A process for making the element is disclosed which includes the step of forming a circular array of pleats, applying pressure to the end sections of the pleats to crush the pleats and rigidify them, and then bending the rest of the array about the rigidified portion to form the thimble-shaped filter element.

    Abstract: A filter cartridge comprising an elongated sheet of porous filter material folded into an array of primary pleats is further folded to define secondary pleats which are tucked between the primary pleats. The secondary pleats define tapered portions at the top and bottom of the filter media, thereby reducing the width of the pleats at the top and bottom thereof to a width less than the primary width of the pleats, to thereby minimize the amount of sealant required to seal the ends of the pleats. The secondary pleats also resist radial and circumferential collapse of the pleats during filtering.

    Abstract: A tape like material including synthetic resin for a filter element is bent into a corrugated pattern while the material is passed between pairs of forming and cutting rollers. Since pairs of cutters are provided within the rollers and since guide plates are provided around the rollers, the material is held abutting the rollers even when the material is cut by the cutters. The material is then conveyed within a reducing drum. The pitch of the corrugated portions formed on the material is reduced and the material is formed into a semicircular shape within the reducing drum. After passed the reducing drum, the material is transferred to a forming path. Since the forming path has an introducing portion having a semicircular sectional shape similar to that of the material leaving the reducing drum, an outlet portion having a circular sectional shape similar to that of the finished filter element and an intermediate portion having a sectional shape gradually varied from the shape of the introducing portion to the shape of the outlet portion, the material is shaped to a complete circle while the material travels along the forming path. A crystal type filter element is thus formed from a tape like material automatically.

    Abstract: A liquid filter includes a filtering medium of a collapsed cylindrical form which defines cooperating accordian pleats that form contaminant collecting walls. The medium is self-supporting, and divides the filter into inlet and outlet chambers across the medium. When the restriction of the medium increases, thereby increasing the pressure differential across the medium, the accordian pleats collapse until corrugations on the pleats engage with one another, thereby resisting further collapse of the medium. As the pressure differential increases still further to the extent that the corrugations are collapsed, a part of each fold is kept apart by adjacent double thickness portion of the fold or pleat, so that a minimum flow of liquid through the filter is maintained.
