This is accomplished by each insert including a generally frustconical transition face extending between the clearance or faceted faces and the rear face of the insert. This transition face provides a transition area between the various cutting geometry's and the generally round seating geometry.

    摘要: A milling tool includes a holder rotatable about an axis and carrying a plurality of cutting inserts at a forward end thereof. Each insert includes a plurality of main cutting edges, and secondary cutting edges disposed on protruding corners of the insert. Each main cutting insert has a clearance surface located therebehind considered with reference to a direction of rotation of the holder. Each clearance surface has surface portion defining a convex profile, the convex profile forming a crest or transition. During a cutting operation, one of the main cutting edges constitutes an axially forwardmost inactive cutting edge. The transition of the clearance surface associated with that inactive edge is disposed axially forwardly with respect to the inactive cutting edge to prevent the inactive cutting edge from impacting against a workpiece.

    摘要: A cartridge just large enough to hold a cutter tooth and a setscrew. The cartridge has an open-sided tap for the setscrew, exposing part of a side of the setscrew. A cutter body has a slot to receive the cartridge. The slot has a leading side with a generally cylindrical smooth wall portion that surrounds the exposed side of the setscrew. The cylindrical concave portion is uniquely angled to wedge the setscrew firmly against the cylindrical concave portion as the setscrew is tightened, and to force the cartridge against the bottom and trailing side of the slot. The cartridge and slot have parallel interlocking interfaces on both their leading and trailing sides. These are slidable interlocks, allowing the cartridge to slide into the slot while engaging both the leading and trailing interlocks. The setscrew can easily be manually tightened while the interlocks hold the cartridge steady in the slot.

    摘要: A multi-faceted T-slot cylinder for a cutterhead is mounted to a wood lathe arbor using set screws installed in tapped holes which are provided near opposite ends of the cylinder in diametrically opposite faces of the cylinder (rather than in the same face, as is conventional). Static balancing of the cylinder is thereby improved. For fine-tuning, a dynamic balancing collar is mounted on the arbor near the cylinder. This collar has a plurality of tapped holes provided radially therethrough around its circumference. As the arbor is turned slowly, if measurement shows eccentricity in rotation, the high side is determined and a set screw tightened against the arbor in the respective tapped hole. This dynamic balancing can be done before or after the cutterhead is installed on the arbor, and the dynamic balancer can be used in combination with a wholly conventional T-slot cylinder.
