Abstract: Routines and methods disclosed herein can increase a power efficiency of a prosthetic hand without drastically reducing the speed at which it operates. A prosthesis can implement an acceleration profile, which can reduce an energy consumption of a motor, or an amount of electrical and/or mechanical noise produced by a motor, as the motor as the motor transitions from an idle state to a non-idle state. A prosthesis can implement a deceleration profile, which can reduce the energy consumption of the motor, or an amount of electrical and/or mechanical noise produced by a motor, as the motor transitions from a non-idle state to an idle state.

Abstract: A prosthetic appendage for attachment to an outer extremity of an amputated limb that is composed of modular elements fabricated by three-dimensional printing. In one embodiment the prosthetic appendage is a leg. The prosthetic leg includes a foot portion and a plurality of modular and three-dimensionally printed limb elements. One of the plurality of limb elements is pivotally coupled to the foot portion and another of the limb elements is configured at one end to receive the outer extremity of the amputated leg. In another embodiment of the present invention the prosthetic appendage is a hand. The prosthetic hand includes a wrist element with one end configured to receive the outer extremity of an amputated hand, a base portion attached to the wrist element and a plurality of modular and three-dimensionally printed finger elements selectively coupled to adjacent finger elements or the base to form prosthetic fingers.

Abstract: An upper extremity prosthesis for placement on a residual limb of a person that includes an elongated member having a first end and an opposite second end and also includes an outer prosthetic shell having a first end and an opposite second end. The prosthesis also includes at least a first support and a second support, wherein the first support and the second support surround and are fixedly coupled to the elongated member at first and second attachment points, respectively. The outer prosthetic shell thus surrounds and is coupled to the first support and the second support. The first support and the second support can be a disk-shaped structure through which the elongated member passes.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, apparatuses, and devices for a prosthetic digit usable with persons with amputations at or proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint. The device restores prehension in a person with missing fingers or thumb by providing opposition to forces in the extension direction via a spring-loaded pawl and locking rack ratchet mechanism, thereby allowing an individual to manipulate or stabilize objects. The digit may be spring-loaded in the extension direction by a torsion spring or other biasing member. The pawl may be automatically disengaged from the rack when the digit reaches full flexion, and the full flexion disengage stop may be adjustable. The pawl may be automatically engaged with the rack when the digit reaches full extension, and the extension stop may be adjustable. The pawl may contain a lateral feature that creates interference with the anchoring linkage under load and limits deflection of the structure.

Abstract: Features for prosthetic digits and actuation systems including transmission features for a worm wheel rotation by a lead screw. A keyed member such as a central axle is spring-biased and transmits rotation from the worm wheel to the digit while allowing for manual rotation of the digit without damaging the worm wheel or other components. In some embodiments, the digit may include a link having flexibility to cause rotation of the digit segments while absorbing shock or otherwise high rotational loads. The digit may include a single-sided drive mechanism, where the opposite side provides support in case of high lateral loads. The digit may include a motor and gearbox in parallel and connected mechanically via a transfer gearbox. The digit may include a variable speed and variable torque gearbox.

Abstract: A prosthetic device and approach for amputee remediation addresses partial or complete replacement of digits, and leverages the use of the remaining functional digits for directing operation of the prosthetic digits. A complete prosthetic digit replaces an amputated digit from actuated movement driven by an adjacent functional digit. A partial amputation leverages residual movement from the remaining digit portion as input to an actuator for amplifying the intent of the input through a motorized actuator to impart movement to the prosthetic digit. A wrist harness supports the apparatus of partial and complete prosthetic digits as a single appliance. A variable compression feature augments tension on the wrist harness to tightly engage the prosthetic appliance to the wrist to offset a gripping load on the prosthetic digits.

Abstract: Features for prosthetic digits are described. The digits mimic natural fingers by having multiple articulating segments, for example three, that can rotate varying amounts. Rotatable and/or linearly expandable mechanical links are configured to provide the digit segments with multiple degrees of rotational freedom. The digit may have an actuator that outputs linear actuation to cause rotation of the digit segments. The digit may have an expandable proximal link to allow for variable relative rotational positions of the segments. Middle and/or distal digit segments may fully rotate independent of rotation of a proximal digit segment. The rotated digit may thus fully surround and grasp small or large objects, objects with irregular outer contours, etc.
