A continuous casting device comprises, in combination, a continuous casting mold for receiving molten metal, and at least one pair of guide rolls disposed immediately downstream of the mold exit opening. The exit opening of the mold is rectangular shaped so as to permit a rectangular strand to be cast which has a liquid core, a width and a thickness. The guide rolls are constructed so as to impart to the rectangular strand leaving the mold exit opening a convex shape so as to prevent snaking of the strand within the continuous casting device. The convexivity concavity extends along at least a part of the width of the strand and is no more than 8% of the strand thickness.

The process includes continuously casting the melt in a vertical mold to form a vertical strand, withdrawing the solidified strand from the mold in a centrally guided manner and directly threading into a surface treatment machine, removing the surface of the strand, laterally cutting the surface-finished strand in a predetermined manner, and removing the cut strand pieces from the machine. The machine for carrying out the process has a base frame which is connected to a foundation and on which a withdrawal device, a surface treatment unit, a cross-cutting device, and a conveying device are provided in line.

The apparatus includes a first chamber disposed about the mold cavity and defined by a top, a bottom, and walls extending between the top and bottom at the inner and outer peripheries of the first chamber. A liquid coolant is supplied under pressure to the first chamber through an inlet. A step is formed adjacent one of the corners between the top and bottom .and the inner peripheral wall of the first chamber, a circumferential groove is formed in the outer peripheral wall of the step, and an elastomeric sealing ring is sealingly engaged with the mouth of the groove to define a second chamber in the groove. Meanwhile, the shoulder of the step is spaced apart from the other corner of the first chamber, and a series of holes is formed in the shoulder to permit the coolant to pass into the second chamber at a reduced pressure. A passage then discharges the reduced pressure coolant onto a body of metal emerging from the discharge end opening of the cavity.

The mold includes a mold tube having pairs of parallel opposed outer surface portions which extend axially of the mold tube. The mold tube defines an axial casting passage having an inlet end for molten metal and an outlet end for a continuously cast strand of the metal. The mold tube is provided with internal concavities which are uniformly distributed peripherally of the casting passage. The internal concavities, which extend in a direction from the inlet end towards the outlet end, become smaller in this direction and are designed so that the strand is shaped as it travels along the casting passage. To form the mold tube, external concavities are impressed or cut in a tubular blank and a mandrel with external protuberances is then pressed into the blank. If necessary, the tubular blank can thereafter be drawn or otherwise processed to produce the desired outer contour of the mold tube.

A method and apparatus for casting a molten metallic material in ingot form are provided wherein the molten metallic material is transported to the ingot mold and an upper surface temperature and temperature distribution of the molten metal pool in the casting mold are measured by an imaging radiometer which is disposed external to an inert gas filled chamber enclosing the ingot mold, and is disposed to view the ingot pool surface through a sight port. At least one plasma arc torch is employed to direct an arc at the ingot pool surface, the intensity of which is selectively modulated and the impingement of the arc is simultaneously selectively positioned in order to maintain a desired preselected mold pool surface temperature and temperature distribution thereby yielding a preselected metallurgical structure in the solidified ingot. The imaging radiometer may provide a video signal as an output, and may be connected to a video analyzer and video monitor which are used to provide an image of the surface temperature and temperature distribution, enabling an operator to control the plasma arc torch in performing the ingot casting method.
