    摘要: Methods, apparatus, and improved structure having as their common basis the sequence of collapsing a piston ring in a fixture approximating engine bore diameter, and lapping a locality at the side of the ring while so collapsed, until a circumferentially continuous portion--narrow in width and preferably line size--of the side is flat in the range of at least about 10 to 5 light bands. That is, the out-of-flatness of the circumferentially continuous portion, stated another way, is limited to a maximum range equivalent to about 5 to 10 light bands at standard inspection wavelength. One of the broadest methods here disclosed is the use exclusively of rings so carefully made and so lap inspected as above on a percentage basis that the inner peripheral edge at the side has all points thereon in coplanarity to a degree equivalent to the stated range to seal in absolute contact in a substantially continuous sealing ring.

    摘要: A helical coil comprising a plurality of turns of bar stock is mounted on an expanding mandrel which is operated by a hydraulic cylinder or the like to expand the internal circumference of the coil against the resilient resistance thereof. A severing device is then employed to form a cut across the turns of the coil so as to sever each turn as a separate ring having a gap therein corresponding in width to the thickness of the severing device. The expanding mandrel is then released so as to allow the rings to spring back to their original circumference. In this way, the gap in each ring is closed. Each ring may then be flattened to remove the helical pitch so that the ring will be in a single plane with the severed ends of the ring aligned. The severed ends may be welded or otherwise joined. The disclosed machine preferably employs a rotary abrasive disc for forming the cut across the turns of the coil. The width of the cut corresponds to the thickness of the abrasive disc. The amount by which the coil is expanded preferably corresponds to the thickness of the abrasive disc so as to compensate for the width of the cut produced by the abrasive disc. The continuing abrasive action of the sides of the disc, as the cut progresses across the turns of the coil, prevents the disc from being pinched by the turns of the coil.

    摘要: Manufacture of engines having grooved pistons and sealing rings fitting in the grooves of the pistons comprising: selection, by means of a selection-rejection process from a plurality of torsion type split compression rings, of rings for the grooved pistons each having at least the first one of its two opposite sides, in the free spring state of the ring, provided with a consistent overall flatness to at least about 10 to 5 light bands and, in the collapsed state with the ring closed or substantially so, said first side being frusto conical and so arranged with respect to the back of the ring that the intersecting portion of the inner periphery of the first side is substantially coplanar at all points on the periphery; sealing said pistons with such compression rings including those rings as so selected, by installation of a ring in an associated compression ring groove on each piston with an associated side of the groove confronting in the described way the first side of the ring; and construction of said engines by assembling such pistons in the respective cylinders with the face of each ring engaging a cylinder wall at all times to retain the ring in collapsed state on the piston, and with the ring effective during engine operation to establish a substantially continuous pressure ring of at least line contact between the coplanar inner periphery of said frusto conical first side and its associated confronting groove side to seal the piston.
