摘要: The invention relates to nanocomposites and processes for making nanocomposites comprising butyl rubber ionomers having at least 3.5 mol % of repeating units derived from a multiolefin monomer, such as isoprene. More particularly, the invention relates to butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites comprising high aspect ratio fillers. In one preferred aspect of the invention, the nanocomposites comprise ionomers that are generated in situ during formation of the nanocomposite, leading to intercalation of the ionomer with the nanocomposite. Nanocomposites according to the present invention exhibit improved impermeability and tensile properties as compared with prior art nanocomposites made using conventional brominated butyl rubber.

摘要: A butyl rubber ionomer having improved adhesion to substrates whose surfaces have polar functional groups. Examples of such substrate materials include stainless steel, glass, mylar or Teflon®. The adhesion of the butyl rubber ionomer to the substrate is at least 25% greater than the adhesion of a non-ionomeric butyl rubber to the same substrate surface and with certain substrates is more than 150% greater. The adhesion is improved with increasing levels of multiolefin content in the butyl rubber ionomer. The adhesion is greatest for butyl rubber ionomers having a high multiolefin content (at least 3.5 mol% of multiolefin monomers or at least 1.5 mol % of residual multiolefins). By taking advantage of these high adhesion levels, a composite article can be formed between the butyl rubber ionomer and the substrate.

摘要: The invention provides a process for preparing a filled halobutyl elastomer, which comprises mixing a halobutyl elastomer, particles of filler and an additive containing both amino and alcohol functional groups, and curing the filled elastomer with sulfur or other curative systems. This invention has the advantages of (a) not evolving alcohol either during the manufacture or subsequent use of the article manufactured from the compound, and (b) significantly reducing the cost of the compound.

摘要: A method to halogenate butyl rubber in the absence of water and, more particularly, without the need for addition of neutralization agents. The butyl rubber contains at least 4.1 mol % of a multi-olefin and the multi-olefin serves as a sink for the hydrohalic Brönsted acids generated when a halogenation agent is added. This obviates the need for aqueous phase acid neutralization. The novel halogenated butyl rubber produced using the method advantageously possesses a high degree of desirable exo-allylic bromides with relatively low levels of the less desirable endo-allylic bromides.

摘要: A peroxide cured rubber composition comprising a first peroxide curable rubber compound comprising a hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber compound (HNBR); a second peroxide curable rubber compound comprising repeating units derived from at least one isoolefin monomer, more than 3.0 mol % of repeating units derived from at least one multiolefin monomer, and a gel content of less than 5.0 wt %; and, repeating units derived from at least one multiolefin cross-linking agent. In a preferred embodiment, the second peroxide curable rubber comprises a peroxide curable butyl rubber (IIR) with a high isoprene content and a low gel content. The composition is particularly useful in the making of hydrocarbon resistant seals. A method of producing the composition is also disclosed, along with a shaped article made from the composition.
