Abstract: An aspirating face seal between high and low pressure regions of a turbomachine at a juncture between rotatable and non-rotatable members of turbomachine includes gas bearing rotatable and non-rotatable face surfaces. Primary and starter seal teeth and optional deflector seal tooth are mounted on seal teeth carrier on rotatable member. Non-rotatable face surface is mounted on an annular slider on the non-rotatable member. A pull-off biasing means urges the annular slider away from the rotatable member and the non-rotatable face surface away from the rotatable surface. A secondary seal is in sealing engagement with the annular slider in the low pressure region and the pull-off biasing means is located radially outwardly of the annular slider in the high pressure region. Biasing means may include coil springs within spring chambers of circumferentially spaced cartridges. Tongues extend inwardly from spring chambers into grooves in slider.

Abstract: An aspirating face seal between high and low pressure regions of a turbomachine at a juncture between rotatable and non-rotatable members of turbomachine includes gas bearing rotatable and non-rotatable face surfaces. Abstract: A seal assembly for a rotary machine is positioned between a rotating component and a stationary component of the rotary machine. The seal assembly includes a seal bearing face that opposes the rotating component and a slide device. The slide device is positioned between different fluid pressure volumes in the rotary machine. The slide device axially moves toward the rotating component responsive to pressurization of the rotary machine. The slide device includes cross-over ports and the seal bearing face includes feed ports. The feed ports extend through the seal bearing face to form an aerostatic portion of a film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component. The seal bearing face and/or the rotating component is a non-planar surface that, during rotating motion of the rotating component, forms an aerodynamic portion of the film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component.

Abstract: An aspect of the present disclosure is directed to a seal assembly. The seal assembly includes a fluid bearing wall including a bearing face defining a fluid opening through the fluid bearing wall. The seal assembly further includes a tilt member is extended from and attached to the fluid bearing wall. The tilt member defines a fluid passage therethrough in fluid communication with the fluid opening at the bearing face of the fluid bearing wall. The seal assembly still further includes a seal body surrounding the tilt member. A cavity is defined between the tilt member and the seal body. The seal assembly further includes a spring member coupled to the seal body and the fluid bearing wall. A passage is defined between the fluid bearing wall and the seal body.

Springs oriented for retracting slider if slider contacts rotatable member. Primary and starter seal teeth may be mounted on carrier on rotatable member. Primary seal tooth may be on non-rotatable member and starter seal tooth on rotatable member.

Abstract: A seal apparatus for a rotary machine, including a plurality of sealing assembly segments surrounding a rotor element which is mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis and has an outer surface. Each of the segments includes a shoe with one or more labyrinth teeth facing the outer surface and a shoe plate disposed downstream of the one or more labyrinth seal teeth and configured to generate an aerodynamic force between the shoe plate and the outer surface of the rotor element. The shoe is further configured to be flexible in a radial-axial plane in response to fluid film forces generated by interaction of the sealing assembly segment and the rotor element, and an axially-oriented beam spring connects the shoe to a stationary seal body.
