Abstract: Systems and methods for a tunable radio frequency synthesizer utilizing optical frequency combs are provided. In one embodiment, an RF signal generator comprises: an SBS pump laser segment including a first and second SBS pump laser each generating SBS laser light at different respective frequencies; a TE/TM dual comb resonator comprising a comb optical resonator coupled to the first and second SBS pump lasers, wherein the comb optical resonator generates a pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs of different polarities from the SBS laser light; a filter resonator segment configured to provide feedback to the TE/TM dual comb resonator to lock a relative position of the pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs, the filter resonator comprising a tunable optical filter to output a discrete tuned RF signal output based on a comb line pair that includes a single comb line from each of the pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs.

Abstract: Techniques for reducing the bias error present in optical gyroscopes is disclosed. Such techniques include at least one path length adjustment member placed in an optical gyroscope resonator, which are configured to modulate the optical path length of the resonator so that bias errors attributable to the optical path length are shifted outside of the bandwidth of the optical gyroscope. In some embodiments, the at least one path length adjustment member includes a plurality of microheaters coupled to the resonator, in which case optical path length modulation is achieved by heating the resonator via the microheaters. Alternatively, a plurality of piezo-electric regions can be placed in the resonator, which enables optical path length modulation through electric field gradients applied to the piezo-electric regions.

Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamic locking of optical path times using entangled photons are provided. A system includes an optical source for generating bi-photons; tracer laser beam sources for generating tracer laser beams; telescopes that emit the tracer laser beams and the bi-photons to remote reflectors, each bi-photon traveling along an optical path in a pair of optical paths toward a corresponding remote reflector, wherein the telescopes receive reflected bi-photons from the remote reflectors; and communication links, wherein the optical source respectively communicates with first and second remote reflectors through a first and second communication link. Also, the optical source uses the tracer laser beams and the communication links to respectively point the bi-photons towards the remote reflectors. Moreover, the system includes an interferometer that provides information regarding detection of the reflected bi-photons, wherein the optical source uses the information to adjust optical path lengths to be substantially equal.

Abstract: An optical coupler device comprises an optical waveguide having a first edge and an opposing second edge that extend in a direction substantially parallel to a propagation direction of an input light beam injected into the optical waveguide. A grating structure is on a portion of the optical waveguide, with the grating structure having a first side and an opposing second side. The first and second sides of the grating structure extend in the same direction as the first and second edges of the optical waveguide. An optical slab adjoins with the first side of the grating structure and is in optical communication with an output of the grating structure. The grating structure includes an array of grating lines configured to diffract the input light beam into the slab at an angle with respect to the propagation direction, such that a diffracted light beam is output from the slab.

Abstract: A ring laser gyroscope comprises an optical block that defines an optical closed loop pathway; at least one mirror structure mounted on the optical block and in communication with the closed loop pathway; at least one volume Bragg grating mounted on the optical block and in communication with the closed loop pathway; and a pump laser in communication with the volume Bragg grating, the laser operative to emit a light beam at a selected incident angle such that the beam passes through the volume Bragg grating and overlaps with the closed loop pathway. The volume Bragg grating is operative as a gain medium to increase an optical power of the beam, and a pair of counter-propagating beams is produced within the closed loop pathway from the beam. The mirror structure and the volume Bragg grating are positioned and angled to reflect the counter-propagating beams around the closed loop pathway.

Abstract: Methods are provided for authenticating a value article that includes a luminescent material. An exciting light source, an optical filter, a photodetector, a signal manipulation circuit, and an amplifier are provided. The luminescent material is exposed to light produced by the exciting light source. Radiation including light from the exciting light source and emitted radiation from the luminescent material is filtered using the optical filter to produce filtered radiation. The filtered radiation is detected using the photodetector to produce a detected radiation signal. The detected radiation signal is electronically manipulated using the signal manipulation circuit to reduce an effect of light from the exciting light source on an authentication determination based upon the detected radiation signal. The detected radiation signal is amplified with the amplifier after electronic manipulation to produce an amplified electronic signal. The amplified electronic signal or data derived therefrom is converted to an authentication output.

Abstract: Systems and methods for zero power automatic thermal regulation are provided. In one embodiment, a method for passive thermal management comprises: establishing thermal conductivity between a self-heating electronic device and a cooling fluid held within a fluid reservoir via a thermal interface; using thermally controlled expansion of the cooling fluid, controlling a length of a column of the cooling fluid extending into at least one channel extending from the fluid reservoir, wherein the channel provides a non-recirculating path for the cooling fluid to expand into, and wherein the length of a column of the cooling fluid is thermally controlled using heat absorbed by the cooling fluid from the self-heating electronic device; and selectively establishing a primary heat path between the electronic device and a heat sink interface thermally coupled to an external environment as a function of the length of the column of the cooling fluid within the channel.
