In a system for electro-optically reading coded indicia, such as bar code symbols, a light sensor in a scanning head generates higher amplitude electrical signals for symbols closer to the head, and lower amplitude electrical signals for symbols further from the head. To decrease this amplitude variation, and thereby increase the depth of the field of the system, various optical elements such as a lens, a louver, a filter and a shade, are proposed.

The signal from the photodetector is digitized and decoded to recover bar code data. The scanning head includes a keyboard for entering data, and a display from showing data, and a microprocessor in the head controls the operations of the various components. A transmitter and receiver may be located in the scanning head for communication with a central computer, and a battery included in the head as a power supply, so that the scanning head need not be connected by a cable to a terminal.

A bar code scanner employs a light source such as a laser for generating a light beam to be directed along a path toward a bar code symbol to be read. A scanner such as a mirror driven by a motor moves the light beam along a scan line across the bar code symbol. A sensor detects the intensity of reflected light from the bar code symbol, and generates an electrical signal in response to this reflected light. A signal processor receives the electrical signal and produces a digitized signal representing the bar code symbol. Control circuit automatically de-energes the scan by shutting off at least one of the light source and the motor after the signal processor has produced a digitized signal representing a valid bar code symbol.

In a system for electro-optically reading bar code symbols, a movable reflector is rearwardly positioned in a hand-held housing. A sensor receives light reflected off a bar code symbol from the reflector over a scan that extends across the entire bar code symbol. The housing has a window, a front end and a handle for enabling a user to hold and support the housing in one's hand, and to aim the front end of the housing at the bar code symbol during reading. A signal processor in the housing processes an electrical signal from the sensor to generate therefrom data descriptive of the bar code symbol being read. The reflector is positioned at a distance from the front end of the housing, and the length of the scan is proportional to that distance.
