The invention relates to a filling system for filling bottles or similar containers (2) with a liquid filling material, said system comprising at least one filling element, a liquid channel formed in a housing of the filling element and connected to a tank for providing the liquid filling material, and at least one outlet for dispensing the liquid filling material into the respective container attached to the filling element. Said filling system also comprises a liquid valve in the liquid channel, a gas return tube that projects past the at least one outlet on one end, for controlling the level of the filling material in the filled container, and is connected to a gas chamber, formed for example in the tank, by means of a fluid connection. The filling system also comprises an open fluid channel inside the filling element, in the region of the outlet. Said channel can be connected to a ring channel guiding a gaseous and/or vaporous fluid under pressure, preferably an inert gas under pressure, and controlled by at least one first control valve.

The nozzle includes a valve seat having a planar sealing surface. A spring actuated vent seal is provided for closing the vent tube. The valve stem may have protrusions for centering the stem in the valve body. The filling valve may have a bell forming a cavity between the bell and the valve body, and an aperture for directing cleaning fluid from within the bell to the cavity. The valve body may have a duct for directing cleaning fluid from the cavity to an outlet.

The conveyor includes a plurality of connected links, and at least one gripping member extending from each of the links. Each gripping member is movable relative to its respective link for gripping a container by the neck of the container. A guide structure is disposed on the link for mating a component of the processing station to the neck of the container for processing the container. The processing station may be a filler such as a rotary filler, a capper, or a rinser. Related individual links, conveying systems, and filler components are also disclosed.

A liquid passage 4 for filling which communicates with a liquid supply piping 6 for filling is formed within a valve housing 2 and carries a filling nozzle 31 at its lower end. The liquid passage 4 is opened or closed by a liquid valve. A packing 38 which seals the mouth of a vessel B, a cylinder 42 which elevates the packing 38, a flow meter 33 which detects a filled content of the liquid which is filled into the vessel B, and an exhaust passage 44 formed in the valve housing 2 are provided. The exhaust passage 44 has an opening disposed toward the vessel which is disposed outside an opening of the filling nozzle 31, and the opening of the filling nozzle 31 is maintained above the elevation of the liquid level which is filled into the vessel B during the filling operation. The filling valve assures a sanitary excellence and is usable with vessels B of differing sizes and shapes.

A system (20) is provided for detecting and ejecting container ends having a reversed orientation from an axially aligned group of otherwise similar nested container ends having a non-reversed orientation. The system includes a support member (36) interposed along the path of movement of the container ends and having a bore (52) and an ejection slot (54). A counting sensor (62) for counting the number of passing container ends and a gap sensor (72) for detecting a gap in the periphery of the axially aligned group caused by a reversed container end are positioned upstream of the ejection slot and connected to a control unit (70). An air nozzle (82) is positioned next to the axially aligned group of container ends in axial alignment with, but laterally opposite to, the ejection slot and connected to a source of pressurized air controlled by the control unit (70). The control unit, upon receiving a signal from the gap detector, waits to receive a predetermined number of count signals from the counting sensor and then activates an air valve (88) releasing an air blast from the nozzle which impinges on the container ends aligned with ejection slot (54) causing reversed container ends to be ejected from the axially aligned group.
