    摘要: A device and method to align the wheels of motor vehicles. A beam of collimated light from a low power visible laser is split into two generally parallel beams by a partially transmitting mirror and a series of plane front surface mirrors positioned in front and along side the vehicle being serviced. The two beams are reflected from a set of plane mirrors attached to the rims of the wheels to be aligned. The vertical and horizontal angles of each of the wheel-mounted mirrors are set by calibrated lead-screws to cancel the angular displacement of the wheels expected when the wheels are properly aligned. The reflected beams are imaged through a large aperture beam combiner on a common viewing screen. Correct toe-in and camber settings are indicated when the laser beams reflected from the wheel-mounted mirrors overlap at the center of the viewing screen. The caster settings of the front wheels are measured by observing the angle at which the reflected spots travel across the screen when the steering wheel is turned. The system can be used to align the front wheels only, or alternatively all four wheels simultaneously.

    摘要: A wheel alignment system includes either four wheel mountable alignment heads or two alignment heads and two retroreflectors or two alignment heads alone together with a control console and display. A main processing unit is included in the console for performing calculations and for controlling systems function control components communications sequences. Each console function control component includes its own controller. The control console further includes a CRT display module and optional voice instruction and printer output modules. A bar code reader is available for quick specifications entry. Communications and decision making instructions are downloaded from the controller in each console function control component to the main processing unit at initialization. Communication between the heads and the console is accomplished either through the use of conducting cords or infrared transmission and reception. Each alignment head also includes a controller which controls collection of alignment data in parallel at each head as well as serial transmission from each head to the console during discrete transmission periods as required by the main processing unit.

    摘要: Four alignment housings are mounted on a garage floor adjacent a conventional lift, so that when a vehicle has been elevated by the lift each of its four independently suspended four wheels will register with an alignment chart that is adjustably mounted on the face of each housing. A beam of light is directed through registering openings in each housing and its attached chart toward a mirror releasably mounted on each vehicle wheel. The mirrors reflect the beams back onto the associated charts, which are calibrated to provide camber, caster and toe-in readings. In one embodiment each housing contains a light source (for example a laser) which directs a beam onto a reflecting surface which is inclined at 45.degree. to the horizontal, so that it projects the beam at right angles out of the housing toward the adjacent wheel. In a second embodiment only one housing at each side of a vehicle contains a light source, and the associated reflecting surface reflects only part of a light beam toward a wheel and permits the remainder to pass out of the housing to a reflective surface in the other housing located on the same side of the vehicle. By making each reflecting surface horizontally adjustable on its housing it is possible to adjust the reflecting surfaces horizontally for use in connection with vehicles having different wheel base lengths.

    摘要: A mirror is mounted in the open end of a circular housing by means of a universal joint formed by a stud which projects from the rear of the mirror into a spherically-shaped knuckle joint that is seated at diametrally opposite sides in a pair of "Teflon" ring bearings carried by two plates that are held over opposite sides of the knuckle by a pair of adjusting screws which can be selectively tightened or loosened to control the resistance to movement of the mirror universally about the center of the joint. The housing is releasably attachable to the hub cap of a front wheel by a plurality of clamps adjustably mounted on arms which project radially from the housing. In use pressure can be applied to the face of the mirror, during rotation of the wheel, to effect coarse adjustment of the mirror into an operating position normal to the axis of rotation of the wheel, and when the wheel is stopped, fine adjustment of the mirror can be effected by screws that are mounted on the housing around the periphery of the mirror.

    摘要: An optical assembly is provided which comprises a light source, preferably a laser, and a particularly compensated prism unit, the laser and the prism unit being mounted on a common holder or base. The beam emitted from the laser is reflected 90.degree. by the prism unit, and although this unit is only approximately aligned with the laser the reflected beam will always form a right angle to the incident beam with an extreme accuracy, the deviation from 90.degree. being less than half an angular minute. The accuracy in reflexion independently of prism unit setting is attributed to the compensated prism unit, which comprises a quadrangular prism composed of two semi-quadrangular prisms, a reflecting surface being mounted, preferably in an adjustable position, adjacent one side of the prism.
