摘要:
This invention relates to a fixture for holding a hole-cutting tool having cutting edges to be ground by means of a grinding wheel. The fixture comprising a stand carrying a pin and also comprises a gripping unit comprising two interconnected gripping jaws and detachably mounted on said pin in one predetermined position and adapted to be mounted thereon in at least one additional predetermined position, which jaws are adapted to grip said tool along an intermediate portion of its length. It is an object of the invention to provide such a tool-holding fixture which can be used in the crafts and in industry to grind relatively large twist drills or other hole-cutting tools which are 20, 40, 60 mm or even larger in diameter. This object is accomplished by the provision of an angle bracket, which comprises a vertical back structure and a horizontal base, wherein the pin for detachably mounting the jaw unit is carried by and rises vertically from the base and the vertical back structure is pivoted to the stand on a horizontal pivotal axis, which extends across the longitudinal axis of a hole-cutting tool gripped by the gripping unit and adjacent to the cutting tip of such tool so that the tool is pivotally movable about the pivotal axis.

A sharpening device, particularly useful for sharpening tools having two identical cutting edges such as drill bits, comprised of a jig for holding a drill bit used with an adjustable support having a rotatable grindstone and a pivot arm retaining means. The jig has a clamp means for releasably retaining a tool or drill bit in it, and a frame. The frame is connected to the clamp means, and typically carries first and second pivot arms which are symmetrically disposed at an angle to the clamp axis. The first pivot arm is placed in the pivot arm retaining means of the support where the jig can rest in a first rest position in which the clamp axis extends forwardly to intersect a grinding face of a grindstone carried in the support, at a predetermined lateral angle of A.sub.1 thereto. In addition, by inverting the jig, it can rest on the support, in a second rest position inverted from the first position, in which the second pivot arm rests in the pivot arm retaining means, with the clamp axis extending forwardly to intersect the same grindstone grinding face at an equal lateral angle of A.sub.2 and at the same intersection point on the clamp axis. Thus, tools such as drill bits, can have each of their cutting edges accurately and identically sharpened, with the points centered and the cutting edges of the same length and angle accurately obtained during sharpening, basically by simply inverting the jig holding the bit.

A carriage is slidably mounted on a baseplate and longitudinally guided thereon in a predetermined direction. An angle bracket is slidably and pivotally mounted on and adapted to be fixed to said carriage and is guided thereon transversely to said predetermined direction. A crosspin is mounted on said angle bracket and adapted to extend transversely to said predetermined direction. A drill holder for holding a twist drill is fitted on said crosspin to be pivotally movable thereon and extends laterally of said angle bracket at an angle to said predetermined direction.

The disclosure relates to a simple drill sharpener for sharpening cutting points of twist drills; the sharpener having a drill guide and holder adapted to hold a drill in certain axial alignment and having means for engaging the trailing edge of one flute of a drill in cooperation with an abutment means which supports the shank end of the drill such that when one facet of the drill point is ground on a grinding wheel, torque is imparted to the drill and forcing it in a rotary direction to maintain it in firm engagement with said flute edge engaging means and with said abutment means, thereby precisely maintaining longitudinal axial position of the drill, and fixing the drill against rotation relative to the holder. Further, the disclosure relates to a carrier for the drill guide and holder, together with mounting means which permits adjustment of the carrier and the drill guide and holder about a generally horizontal axis and generally vertical axis, and further provides for the sweeping action of the drill guide and holder relative to a grinding wheel about an axis parallel to the rotary axis of the grinding wheel which is provided with a grinding face disposed at right angles to the rotary axis of the grinding wheel. The guide and drill holder may be replaced by a table for supporting a tool to be sharpened by a grinding wheel.

A sharpener having a clam-shell housing in which a motor is mounted for driving a grinding wheel disposed adjacent one end of the housing, a chuck which holds either twist drills or a diamond dresser, the chuck being indexable 180.degree. about its axis, and structure for mounting the chuck relative to the grinding wheel so that either the twist drill can be moved in a prescribed manner across the grinding periphery of the grinding wheel, or so that the diamond dresser can be moved across the grinding wheel in order to dress the wheel to a form suitable for sharpening twist drills or the like, and also means for moving the twist drills or the like or diamond dresser towards the grinding wheel.

This disclosure relates to a power tool having an integral bit or implement sharpener which permits a bit to be sharpened by the power tool whenever the need arises. One example of this would be a portable power drill in which the drill or implement is normally driven by the electric motor mounted in the housing. A grinding wheel is connected at the opposite end of the motor so that whenever the bit needs sharpening it is simply removed from its driven connection or chuck and placed in a support assembly for manual turning in contact with the grinding wheel. Also, cam means are provided on the support assembly whereby the proper rake angle for the cutting edge being sharpened will be maintained. The support assembly provides for aligning for the axis of the drill with respect to the grinding wheels surface at a predetermined surface angle and coacts with the cam means so as to produce the desired rake angle for the cutting edge in question.
