摘要:
A one-piece plastic wad structure for use with a shotshell, the wad structure having a projectile-receiving pocket, an obturating pocket, and a transverse wall integral with the pockets and separating one pocket from the other. The projectile pocket and obturating pocket have side walls of solid plastic, and at least a portion of the transverse wall is foamed plastic. The transverse wall is of substantial thickness so as to cushion the shot charge when a cartridge containing the wad is fired. The wad structure is formed by injecting a molten mixture of a resinous material and a foaming agent into a mold cavity, cooling the injected mixture so as to partially solidify the mixture in the cavity, and then reducing pressure in the cavity by enlarging its volume to permit the transverse wall portion of the injected mixture to foam in situ.

The invention concerns a projectile for smooth barrel hunting guns or rifles. The projectile is inserted into a cartridge housing the charge, the priming system and sealing wad of limited thickness. The projectile comprises a substantially spherical body made of lead or other suitable material and is provided in its lower section with a flat chamfered base. The spherical projectile includes an internal cavity connected to an auxiliary wad, cylindrical in shape and containing helical tabs formed by grooves. The diameter of the projectile and the auxiliary wad correspond to the internal diameter of the cartridge which houses the projectile.

A wad for a shotgun shell comprising a polyethylene unit having an obturator wad connected to a shot pouch by a generally helically extending compression spring member, the flights of which are maintained in spaced relation by axially extending strut members arranged to cause the spring member to increase in radial dimensions when compressed in an axial direction and thereby scrub the barrel interior as it leaves the latter upon firing of the shell.

A one piece plastic wad for a shotgun cartridge forming a cover for the powder charge, having conical leaves forming a shot pouch, the leaves being axially separated with their edges inclined to the radius of the wad.

A shot shell having a tubular casing made of hard polycarbonate plastic and terminating at its lower end at an integral base wall formed to provide an inwardly and axially projecting primer pocket is provided with a soft, yieldable polyethylene base wad having an axially extending central passage within which said primer pocket is received. The concave top surface of the base wad has a central aperture of smaller diameter than said axially extending passage, thereby defining an annular shoulder which abuts against the top of said primer pocket in sealing contact therewith. The aforesaid central aperture in the top of the base wad has a diameter at least equal to that of the inside of the primer pocket to thereby provide an unrestricted flash passage above a primer cap inserted into the primer pocket. An annular clearance space between the axial passage in the base wad and the tubular primer pocket in combination with a plurality of longitudinally spaced peripheral teeth on the base wad provide expansion room into which the resilient base wad may be compressed downwardly to provide a cushioning and shock absorbing effect that protects the lower end and base wall of the hard plastic casing from the pressures generated by the exploding propellant charge within the casing.

A shotgun shell designed to generate a lower and more extended pressure curve upon ignition of the powder. The shell consists of a conventional casing, primer and shot cup, the latter being made of any of a number of configurations and materials. Disposed intermediate the primer end and in covering relation to the powder is a pressure plate that conforms to the cross-sectional shape of the casing interior. The pressure plate, in preferred form, contains a plurality of apertures so that upon application of a specified relatively low pressure, the surface area of the plate which the apertures define is caused to fracture, thus reducing the pressure in the powder chamber of the casing. As a result, the increasing kinetic energy generated by the continued burning of the powder (which is normally utilized to ''''initiate movement'''' of the static shop cup) may be applied toward the ''''acceleration'''' of the shop cup since the initial movement of the cup will have been initiated by the low-pressure force occurring upon fracturing of the plate.
