The invention provides a foamed body of thermoplastic resin having a high expansion ratio, desired shape and cells of desired diameter, especially fine cells. The foamed body of thermoplastic resin is produced by filling the thermoplastic resin containing a foaming agent into a cavity 31 of a mold 2a and thereafter enlarging the cavity 31 to expand the resin. In this process, the cavity 31 is completely filled with the resin as melted and containing the foaming agent, then held in its shape as filled with the resin and enlarged to an increased final cavity width upon the average temperature filled in the cavity 31 reaching the range from the melting point of the resin to the melting point plus 30° C.

The invention relates to a method of producing molded bodies of expanded plastic having a predetermined density, based on a starting material in granulate form to which a blowing agent and optionally a cross-linking agent have been added, said starting material being introduced into an injection molding machine/press in which it is heated and injected/pressed into a mold. In order to obtain an efficient production process without loss of raw material and a product whose density can be determined in advance, the material in the injection molding machine/press is heated to a temperature which is below the temperature required to initiate the reaction of the blowing agent/cross-linking agent, and the blank thus formed is subsequently transferred to an expansion mold having the shape of the desired final product, but larger, than the blank. The blank is caused to expand in the expansion mold and final expansion takes place outside the expansion mold. One is thus permitted to operate with a lower pressure than required previously.

A method for making a foam sheet having ventilation holes includes the steps of: (a) preparing first and second molds, each including lower and upper mold parts separably closed to each other so as to define first and second mold cavities for the first and second molds, respectively, and providing the second mold with a plurality of pins extending into the second mold cavity, the second mold cavity being larger than the first mold cavity; (b) placing a foamable blank into the first mold cavity; (c) foaming the blank in the first mold cavity; (d) placing the blank foamed in step (c) into the second mold cavity, and piercing the blank through the use of the pins; and (e) foaming the blank to form a foam product within the second mold cavity while being pierced by the pins.
