Embodiments of the invention provide a loop antenna circuit comprising a loop antenna disposed to generate, in response to an electromagnetic wave, a pick-up signal on an output node. Loop antenna circuit further includes a tuning network coupled to the loop antenna. The tuning network is disposed to provide simultaneous tuning at a plurality of interrogation frequencies. Further embodiments include a preamplifier circuit coupled to the loop antenna. The preamplifier circuit is disposed to receive the pick-up signal on an input node and provide a high impedance load to the loop antenna for a first of the plurality of interrogation frequencies to reduce the secondary radiation from the loop antenna to below a predetermined value at the said first interrogation frequency.

The measurement device is also configured to determine the lateral position of the transmitting source relative to the coils responsively to the phase of the signals on the first coil and the second coil.

    摘要: There is disclosed herein a method of enhancing the vertical resolution of an induction tool, in a manner that may advantageously also reduce undesirable borehole and nullnegative resistivitynull effects. In one embodiment, the method comprises: a) obtaining a vertical magnetic dipole (VMD) response signal from a transmitter-receiver array of antenna elements having magnetic dipoles oriented parallel to a tool axis; b) obtaining a horizontal magnetic dipole (HMD) response signal from a transmitter-receiver array of elements having magnetic dipoles oriented perpendicular to the tool axis; and c) combining the VMD and HMD response signals to obtain a combination response signal. When the relative weights of the VMD and HMD response signals are set as described herein, the combination response signal (and any log calculated therefrom) has a narrow, substantially rectilinear, vertical measurement profile. Further, the combination response signal is relatively insensitive to borehole effects.

Electromagnetic couplings among a plural of triad transmitters and triad receivers are measured. Each triad transmitter/receiver consists of coil windings in three mutually orthogonal axes. The transmitter coils and receiver coils are oriented such that mutually symmetrical transmitter pairs or mutually symmetrical receiver pairs are equidistant from a centrally located receiver or transmitter, respectively. The measured signals from the created couplings are used to generate initial separate estimates of the dip angle of the formation. The two discrete determinations of dip angle are then averaged to arrive at a more accurate estimate that to approaches the true dip angle in the formation.

    摘要: An improved induction tool for formation resistivity evaluations. The tool provides electromagnetic transmitters and sensors suitable for transmitting and receiving magnetic fields in radial directions that are orthogonal to the tool's longitudinal axis with minimal susceptibility to errors associated with parasitic eddy currents induced in the metal components surrounding the transmitter and receiver coils. The present invention provides increased effective tool surface impedance by increasing self-inductance of the paths in which induced eddy currents flow on the surface of the multi-component induction instruments. The tool enables downhole tool designers to build more effective and better-protected radial induction arrays for existing and future downhole instruments operating in the frequency and/or time domains. In this case the array measurement results contain information primarily about the formation's vertical resistivity. The tool makes it possible to combine radial arrays with coaxial arrays that conventionally measure horizontal formation resistivity. This combination enables obtaining a full resistivity tensor to evaluate formation resistivity anisotropy. The tool provides a composite non-conductive housing to reduce or even avoid the effects of parasitic eddy currents flowing on the tool surface. The tool provides a non-magnetic housing that is conductive which reduces the effects of conductive materials near coils and, primarily, the receiver. The tool provides a non-conductive coating is placed over the housing to prevent high frequency eddy currents from leaking from the housing in the conductive mud of the adjacent wellbore and returning to the housing.

Guide wires are located along the earth's surface above the prescribed borehole path and the known electromagnetic field produced by current in the guide wires are detected by the sensors.
